This image was captured on a crisp morning in March 2016 off the deck of the Staten Island Ferry. The sky was lightly peppered with gulls following the wake of the craft. As with most images, you get a lucky break as with the placement of the gull in the top center. But, post production is just as important. The full, original image was flat and dull. After color desaturation, cropping (the original image is a bit larger with a lot of water in the foreground), and adjusting tone, the B&W zonal range popped out. This made the building faces push to the high and low ends creating great visual interest and almost three-dimensional. It was serendipity for the white gull to appear in front of the darker part of the sky. As a note, I also like to keep processing to a minimum of fuss. I prefer to use Apple's Photos program. It's editing is basic, but quite robust. If I need to do more processing, then I prefer Adobe's Photoshop.
