I was told by the owner that this field was in full bloom only a few days before I arrived but had been decimated by a recent overnight cold snap. When I hiked down to the field, it was pretty dismal. So, I walked the field looking for survivors. Not a single flower was in full bloom. Most had already lost their petals. This one flower was still holding on to life. Taller than the rest. The sun was setting and, for a few moments, there was direct sunlight illuminating it. It was a cloudless evening. The trees in the background were dull. The sunflower field was dying. So, I wanted a shallow depth of field to highlight the subject and capture the energy of this one flower holding on to life knowing it would not survive much longer.
