On my last day shooting in South Dakota, I woke up before sunset to thunderclouds and gloomy weather. Pretty much having decided to drive out of the region, in the distance I spotted a rainbow and changed my mind. I wanted to head into Badlands National Park one last time and capture this rainbow over the Colored Mounds area. I made it to the scene, set up my composition, and shot away. Back home, I attempted to bring out the colors of clay layers and shape light in a way that enhanced the colored mounds and the valleys they create. The thundercloud towering above the landscape explodes from a cluster of light cloud and, in the distance, the rainbow that drew me there.
