10 Last-Minute Gifts for Tech Lovers

The holiday season has crept up on us once again, and it looks like you're having a hard time figuring out what to get for the tech lover in your life. Fear not! I've compiled a short list of gifts any techie would love.

1. Streaming Media Player

The NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV Pro is virtually an all-in-one gift. It streams compatible content in 4K UHD with support for the HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR format, enabling crisp, detailed video with compatible content on 4K HDR TVs. The Android 9.0 Pie operating system lets you download Android apps and games for use right on your TV; your techie can even connect a game controller (such as the Sony DualShock 4) for convenient gameplay.

If your gift recipient doesn't have a smart TV yet, the Android OS enables the SHIELD to act like an external smart TV box. It can even be controlled by the user's Amazon Alexa ecosystem, and the Google Assistant is also built in.

2. TV Webcam

The Facebook Portal TV is much more than a TV webcam, but I find it difficult to give it more of a description while keeping it to just one line. It sits below or mounts atop your techie's TV and lets them make video calls via Messenger or WhatsApp, letting them keep in touch with family and friends with those apps around the world. The person on the other end doesn't even need their own Portal TV; they can use their phone, tablet, or whatever they normally use to video chat with those apps.

The Portal TV also has Amazon Alexa built in, so your tech lover can start or accept a video call with just his or her voice. Its 12.5MP camera has a 120° field of view and can pan and zoom to follow single users or widen to keep everyone in the room in frame.

3. Virtual Assistant Speaker

The Google Home Mini is small enough to integrate into nearly any space. Powered by the Google Assistant, it can recite recipes, tell you sports scores, update you on the weather and traffic situation, play music, control other compatible smart home devices, and more.

It connects via Wi-Fi, so only a USB cord for power is required to run to the speaker. It supports services like Spotify, Pandora, Google Play Music, and more.

4. Smart Clock

The Lenovo Smart Clock with the Google Assistant also has the Google Assistant built in, but adds a 4" touchscreen display that shows the time with customizable clock faces, and displays weather, traffic, and other info when asked. With the Google Assistant, your techie can set specific routines, such as “good night,” which will lock doors, turn out lights, play relaxing music, and more.

Conveniently, the entire screen functions as a snooze button, so there won't be any worrying about whether the alarm was snoozed or shut. A rear USB port lets the user charge their smartphone or smart watch overnight.

5. Smart Lighting System

A smart lighting system such as the Philips Hue A19 Starter Kit will brighten any tech lover's holiday. Four bulbs are included, so users can start or expand their smart home to up to four rooms and control the color and brightness of the lights with Amazon Alexa, the Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Microsoft Cortana, or the Philips Hue or Philips Hue Bluetooth app.

The included Hue Bridge supports up to 50 total bulbs and 12 accessories, allowing it to be integrated into larger Philips Hue ecosystems. Custom schedules can be created to turn the lights on or off at set times.

6. UAV with Built-In Camera

We've all spent more time indoors than usual this year, so why not stretch our legs, find an open area like a park, and take some scenic photos or videos from the air? The DJI Mini 2 has a built-in 12MP camera that can capture 4K UHD video at up to 30 fps for clear, detailed stills and video. Its 3-axis gimbal helps keep footage steady while in flight.

The Mini 2 can fly up to 6.2 miles horizontally, or as high as 2.5 miles for long-distance exploration while hiking, or if your tech lover gets so distracted by the video feed sent back to their phone via the DJI Fly app that they don't realize how far the drone is. It can fly up to 36 mph for up to 31 minutes on a single charge.

7. Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Whether your techie is taking their new drone for a spin or just enjoying some time outside, the JBL Flip 5 will let them enjoy their music while they do it. It has a built-in 12-hour battery for long listening sessions and has an IPX7 rating, so getting splashed or caught in the rain won't harm it.

The Flip 5 also has a ruggedized rubber housing to protect it against drops.

8. Android Smartwatch

Smartwatches provide a lot of functionality, whether you're at home or on the go. The Moto 360 Smartwatch features the Wear OS operating system powered by Google, giving your techie access to a host of compatible apps, including Messaging, WhatsApp, Gmail, Google Maps, Spotify, Pandora, and more. It can even interface with their phone's Google Assistant, so they can keep their phone in their purse or pocket.

The 1.2" touchscreen is complemented by the included brown leather strap or black silicone strap.

9. watchOS Smartwatch

While technically not a different type of product, different tech lovers have different needs. You wouldn't get the Android smartwatch for someone who loves their Apple products, so get them the Apple Watch SE instead. It is compatible with iOS devices and has a series of fitness features to help your techie get or stay in shape. It also lets them interact with Siri.

The Apple Watch SE is water-resistant down to 164', so it can be used safely while jogging in the rain or swimming.

10. B&H Gift Card

If you don't see something your tech lover would like, or something they don't already have, then the safest gift might be the B&H Gift Card. It's available in denominations ranging from $20 to $1,000 and can be sent by mail or delivered electronically for a completely touch-free experience. It works on the B&H website, over the phone, or in store. The physical version is so compact, your techie can keep it in their wallet or pocket for use whenever and wherever they like.
