The Best Adventure Accessories for Mobile Devices

0Share

During this year’s Adventure Week, we swam with the sharks, ran a four-mile obstacle course, hiked a 100-foot waterfall, and sailed the ocean blue. Along the way, we picked up some great tips and tricks, including what gear to bring along. For our mobile devices, we also learned that adding a little “rugged” to your equipment is key. To help you prep for your next adventure, we created a list of our favorite accessories to help toughen up your mobile devices.

Ruggedized Cases

Most adventures include an elevated risk factor, especially for mobile devices. That’s why the first thing you want to do is add some extra protection. Most of us already have some sort of cover on our phones and tablets, but often, an extreme endeavor demands a more extreme case—especially against tougher terrain. If you’re adventuring somewhere that requires some supplemental safeguards, consider upgrading to a ruggedized case. Any case from Otter Box’s Defender series or Under Armor should give you the extra protection you need, plus, they look pretty sharp, so you can adventure in style.

Bag It Up

If your adventure involves some seafaring, consider picking up a waterproof case or bag to keep your devices dry. OverBoard offers eco-friendly options for tablets and smartphones. Not only do these waterproof pouches keep water out, they also float in case you drop them overboard. Plus, they come with lanyards and hoop-and-fastener attachments, so they’re easy to wear or transport.

Portable Power

All the add-ons and accessories in the world won’t do much good if your device is dead. That’s why you should always carry a portable battery pack with you. Simple, straightforward, and incredibly useful, battery packs keep you juiced up during all your adventures. Personally, I prefer my fast-charging Belkin Pocket Power (10,000mAh capacity, dual USB ports, and a slim, easy-to-carry design), but there are tons of great options available. Find the one that best suits your needs and never worry about a dead device again.

Camera Accessories

One of the reasons we brought our mobile devices with us on all our adventures was so we could capture the moments with our cameras. If you’re looking to improve the quality of those moments, consider picking up a mobile camera accessory, like an attachment lens or filter. Depending on the lens, you can change the field of view, aspect ratio, and make other modifications to enhance your footage. Of course, a great shot isn’t all about the camera lens—a steady surface and the right angle are also contributing factors. To keep your device stabilized, consider bringing some sort of ruggedized stand or tripod, like what Joby offers with its ruggedized GorillaPod series. And for that perfectly angled self-portrait, make sure you’ve got a selfie stick in tow.

Rugged Storage Solution

One issue you might encounter while adventuring is running low on storage. After all, taking lots of photos and video also means taking up lots of space on your device. One great way to avoid that problem is with a portable storage drive. However, considering you will be up against some pretty tough terrain, you want to make sure your drive is up to the challenge. That’s why we recommend the LaCie DJI Copilot, a portable 2TB hard drive that comes with an integrated SD card reader, backup battery for charging USB devices, and it supports iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac devices. Best of all, it’s drop, splash, and dust-resistant, so it’s ready for whatever adventure you throw at it. Don’t be misled by the DJI in the name, either. Yes, this drive does support DJI drones, but the Copilot is a great storage solution for all mobile devices, including phones, tablets, laptops, and drones.
