Since its inception, the Sony Xperia line has been one of the most prolific smartphone series on the market. This year has proven to be no different, because Sony has announced four so far—yes, four—new Xperia phones. But which one is right for you? To help you graduate into an Xperia expert, we’ve put together this handy buying guide.
Xperia 1
Top Features: 4K OLED HDR “CinemaWide” Display, Professional-Grade Triple-Rear Camera System with Eye AF
Not only is the Xperia 1 the best phone Sony has ever produced, it’s one the most sophisticated smartphones on the market. What’s so special about it? For starters, it boasts maybe the greatest display ever put into a smartphone: a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED panel that uses a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio and Sony’s advanced image processing to deliver content that’s as close to the creator’s vision as we’ve ever seen. If that weren’t enough, Sony went ahead and loaded the Xperia 1’s triple-rear camera system with tech straight from its renowned Alpha series. The result is a long list of professional-grade features, some never before seen in a smartphone camera—Eye AF (Autofocus) and 10 fps AF/AE (Auto Focus and Auto Exposure), for example. In addition to the world’s first 4K HDR OLED display and its pro-caliber camera system, the Xperia 1 also features the most current Snapdragon chipset and the latest version of Android OS. The list goes on, but the TL;DR of it is: If you want the absolute best Sony has to offer, the Xperia 1 is it.
Xperia 10
Top Features: 6" Full HD+ Display with 21:9 Aspect Ratio, Innovative Interface and Design, Excellent Sound Quality
While the Xperia 1 is undoubtedly the flagship of the Xperia line, both the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus are noteworthy midrange devices that deliver solid performance at roughly a third of the cost. Like, the Xperia 1, the Xperia 10 makes use of a 21:9 aspect ratio that lets you enjoy movies as they were intended to be seen. Another benefit of the elongated display is that it facilitates unique features like split-screen multitasking; plus, more screen means you get more content, whether it’s watching a movie or using an app. Despite its elongated design, the Xperia 10 is very travel friendly. It fits nicely in both your hand and your pocket. The 10’s display and chipset aren’t as advanced as the Xperia 1, but it does rival the flagship in sound quality, thanks to its advanced audio technology.
Xperia 10 Plus
Top Features: 6.5" Full HD+ Display with 21:9 Aspect Ratio, 12MP and 8MP Rear Cameras with 2x Optical Zoom, Excellent Sound Quality
The Xperia 10 Plus launched as a super-sized alternative to the Xperia 10. With the Plus, you get a bigger screen, bigger battery, and more RAM. You’re also going to get slightly more megapixels out of the rear camera setup and an incrementally better CPU. But for all intents and purposes, if you’re opting for the Plus over the standard-sized Xperia 10, it’s because you like more screen. At 6.5 inches, the Xperia 10 Plus gives you a solid half inch more of screen real estate, making it as large as the flagship. Like the standard Xperia 10, you also get excellent sound quality, handy multitasking tools, and user-friendly features like Side sense, which corrals users’ favorites apps into a smaller screen for quick access. Again, bottom line: If you want the same size screen of the flagship, and you’re OK with it being not quite as sharp, then the Xperia 10 Plus is a good bet.
