Apple’s new smart battery cases take care of two problems in one device. They give your new iPhone a much-needed protective case, and add a significant amount of extra battery life. Exactly how much is a “significant amount”? Well, while it all ultimately depends on how you use your phone, here’s how much your iPhone’s average power performance will improve.
The built-in battery of the iPhone XS provides an average of up to 20 hours of talk time, up to 12 hours of Internet use, and up to 14 hours of video playback. Add a smart battery case, and you get up to 33 hours of talk time, up to 21 hours of Internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback. If you own an iPhone XR, your phone’s average Talk Time/Internet/video hours are 25/15/16. With the case, they jump to 39/22/27. iPhone XS Max owners have similar improvements, going from averages of 25/13/15 for Talk Time/internet/video, to 37/20/25.
With Apple being Apple, a lot of thought went into the design of these smart battery cases. The additional battery gives the cases the slightest of bumps, yet they still managed to keep everything relatively slim and pocket-friendly. In addition, a built-in elastomer hinge makes installation and removal easier. When inside the case, your iPhone will enjoy a scratch-resistant, soft, microfiber lining. On the outside, Apple gave the silicone exterior a silky, soft-touch feel that’s meant to feel great in your hands.
On the practical side of the case’s design, the iPhone’s buttons, Lightning port, and camera are all functional and useable while in the smart battery case. The case is even compatible with Qi-certified chargers, giving you the ability to recharge your iPhone and case wirelessly. While that’s certainly a handy feature to have, the fastest charging will come via the Lightning port and an (optional) USB-PD charger. You’ll know exactly when to recharge, thanks to the iPhone’s intelligent battery status, which displays the phone’s overall battery life on the lock screen and in Notification Center.
