CES 2015: Garmin vivoFit Smartwatches

36Share

The New Year may be only five days old, but Garmin has already introduced two new products to help you keep your fitness-related resolutions. The first is the vivofit 2 activity tracker, a successor to the popular original vivofit that improves on its predecessor with several new features to get you active and healthy. To make sure your stats are visible at all times, night or day, Garmin has outfitted the vivofit 2 with a backlit display. The move bar, which reminds you to stay active throughout the day, has also received an upgrade, in the form of an audible alert, to remind you to get up and go when you spend more than an hour idle. An activity timer allows you to record activities with or without an optional heart-rate monitor, and automatic Bluetooth sync ensures that your vivofit 2’s data makes it onto your compatible Apple or Android smartphone all by itself. The vivofit 2 lasts more than a year before requiring a battery change, and is water resistant to 164' (50 m). To suit every unique style, the Style Collection offers a wide selection of vivofit 2 bands, featuring a leather cuffs, metal bracelets, and a range of brightly colored patterns from designer Jonathan Adler.

Garmin has also brought out an entirely new line-blurring product, called vivoactive, which bridges the gap between fitness trackers and smartwatches. This slim watch’s full-color touchscreen shows you alerts for incoming calls, texts, emails, appointments, and social media notifications, while built-in GPS and sensors track your movement. A slew of built-in apps allow you to track your walking, running, cycling, and swimming stats and a golf app lets you measure your game on any of the 38,000 courses across the world with downloadable course maps. When not in a specific sport-tracking mode, the vivofit functions as an activity tracker, cataloguing your calories burned, steps taken, and sleep patterns, so you can lead a healthier life. Garmin’s Connect IQ store lets you customize your vivoactive even more by downloading watch faces and apps, as well as adding data fields and widgets to your existing apps. A built-in rechargeable battery lasts up to three weeks, or 10 hours with GPS turned on.

availability, price, type of clasp, cost of replacement battery

Hi John,

As these are newly-announced products I don't have exact pricing or availability yet, but Garmin has informed us that that they should be ready to go in the first quarter of this year.

I'm not sure if there's a technical term for the type of clasp on the vivofit 2, but I've included a picture below where you may be able to see it better. The vivoactive uses a standard buckle-style watch closure.

As for batteries: The vivofit 2 runs on two CR1632 batteries, available from B&H right here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=CR1632&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=

Unfortunately we don't have that information yet as this is a brand new item. Please check back for pricing and availability. Thanks!

No mention of windows compatibility.

Hi AnselCharles!

I don't have all the specs yet on these brand-new products, but based on my experience with other Garmin wearables, including the previous generation vivofit, these will likely work with Windows. They are also compatible with your smartphone, so you can sync on the go.

I am looking forward to better understanding the options.

Hi Arline,

Although my information is limited as it's a brand new product, I may still be able to help you out. What in particular would you like to better understand?
