As smartphones and tablets continue to gain ubiquity, the applications for which we use them are also growing in scope. Both iOS and Android devices have established themselves as not only communication devices that allow us to ignore each other at social gatherings, but as fully fledged creation devices for music, podcasting, and photography work. However, there is a challenge in how to physically integrate these devices into a workflow that otherwise keeps our hands busy.
Enter the recently announced iKlip Xpand, MINI, and Stand from IK Multimedia, a company that knows a thing or two about enabling portable devices for pro applications. iKlip Xpand is geared toward live use, and lets you attach any tablet with a screen size between 7 and 12.1" to a music or mic stand. Thanks to its size adjustability, it will fit most typical devices, ranging from an iPad mini to a Samsung Galaxy Tab, even the new Microsoft Surface 3. The Xpand’s mount is hinged in a way that lets you switch between portrait and landscape views easily on your device without having to remove it from the mount.
The MINI is geared toward live use, as well, and lets you attach any smart device with a screen size between 3.5 and 5.5" to a mic stand. Thanks to its size adjustability, it will fit most typical devices ranging from an iPod touch to a Samsung Galaxy S5. The MINI’s mount is hinged in a way that lets you switch between portrait and landscape views easily on your device without having to remove it from the mount. The Xpand has a similar feature set and functionality as the MINI, but is sized to handle tablets between 7 and 12.1".
The Stand, as its name implies, is a riser stand that can be adjusted to fit tablets between 7 and 12.1", so you can easily connect an iPad mini or Air to it. Like its little brother, the MINI, the Stand can rotate between landscape and portrait without the need to remove your device. Additionally, it has a ball joint, multiple-angle design that provides two independent articulations. The Stand gives you enough room between its arm and the base to fit a MIDI controller or mixer beneath it. IK Multimedia even includes a tabletop clamp for more permanent installation.
The iKlip Xpand, Xpand mini, and Stand are made in Italy of rugged thermoplastic for years of reliable use, and offer the same rubber grips to ensure your device isn’t scratched or marred.
