Sony Announces Xperia 1 Smartphone with 4K OLED Display

Exciting news for anyone in the market for a new smartphone: The Sony Xperia 1 is finally available for purchase in the United States. Debuted at this year’s Mobile World Congress, and already sold out in parts of Europe, the Xperia 1 is one of the most sought-after phones of the year. Why all the hype? Well, with arguably the world’s greatest display, a professional-grade camera setup, and some truly innovative design features, the Xperia 1 has a lot of things going for it.

The Xperia 1 features the world’s very first 4K HDR OLED panel. It measures 6.5 inches, has a ridiculous 643ppi, and offers a 21:9 aspect ratio. Sony has labeled this setup the “CinemaWide” display, and for good reason. It’s an objectively astounding screen that’s designed to deliver both cinematic aspect ratio and color accuracy—essentially a movie lover’s dream come true. Sony went all in on trying to make the content you view on the Xperia 1 as close to the creator’s vision as possible, and with the included image processing technologies, it looks like the company might have done it.

The Xperia 1’s display will probably turn the most heads, but it’s not the only groundbreaking technology the phone has to offer. The triple rear-camera system is another major highlight. On paper, the specs alone are impressive. The system includes three 12MP shooters: a 16mm super-wide, a versatile 26mm, and a 52mm telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. But the bigger story is that Sony was able to borrow technology from its lauded Alpha series to create a mobile image-processing engine specifically designed for the Xperia 1. Sony’s calling this engine BIONZ X, and it will give Xperia 1 users many of the same features seen in Sony’s professional cameras. Of these features, one of the most noteworthy is Eye AF (Autofocus), which has never been done in a smartphone before. On top of that, users get a ton of high-level photo and video features, including optimized low-light shooting, 10 fps AF/AE (Auto Focus and Auto Exposure), the ability to record 4K video, full control over ISO and shutter speed—just to name a few.

Just like photography, Sony is one of the biggest names in the video game industry. So, it’s no surprise they imbued the Xperia 1 with some serious gaming chops. The 21:9 display plays a big part in that, because it gives users a larger field of view. But Sony also included a special Game Enhancer mode that optimizes the performance of the Xperia 1 specifically for gaming—blocking pesky notifications from appearing on screen during you game, for example.

Lost in all the glitz of the display and powerful camera are the other details that prime the Xperia 1 to be such a powerful flagship. For starters, it features a Snapdragon 855 chipset, the most advanced CPU Sony has ever put into a smartphone. It’s running Android 9 Pie, the most current Android mobile OS. Its body is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and is rated IP65/68 water resistant, so it’s safe against the elements. And it’s equipped with a power-friendly 3330mAh battery that can get you a 50% charge in only 30 minutes.

The Xperia 1 appears to be a major breakthrough for the Sony brand. It comes with, perhaps, the greatest display we’ve ever seen in a smartphone. Its camera system rivals any other setup on the market. And, with the latest Snapdragon CPU, Android operating system, and a bevy of user-friendly features, it could be very well be the phone to beat in 2019.

The Xperia 1 is available to order now at B&H. And, if you order between June 28 and July 12, you can get a special Sony Xperia 1 kit, which includes the Sony WH-1000XM3 Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones, and save $349.99 off the entire package.
