GoPro Announces the New HERO3 Action Camera & Accessories

GoPro has just announced their new HERO3 action cameras, as well as several accessories including the LCD Touch BacPac, second-generation Battery BacPac, the HERO3 Frame Mount and a Wi-Fi Remote with an optional Attachment Keys + Rings set for connecting the Wi-Fi Remote to your car keys or zipper. Also announced is a 3.5mm Mic adapter.

The new GoPro HERO3 camera is available in two models - the HERO3: Silver Edition and the HERO3: Black Edition. The HERO3: Silver Edition is a Wi-Fi enabled action camera with an 11-megapixel image sensor and a wide angle aspherical lens. Like its predecessor, the HD HERO2, it also comes with a waterproof housing that can protect the camera to a depth rating of 197’ (60 m). It also captures up to Full HD 1920 x 1080p video at 30 fps, and supports several other recording resolutions and frame rates.

The HERO3: Silver Edition is compatible with the LCD Touch BacPac, the Battery BacPac and the Wi-Fi Remote. It has a micro HDMI output, a microphone/composite video port, and a microSD card slot that supports up to 64GB cards. The camera also features video looping, Protune capabilities, manual white balance, burst shooting at 10 fps and time-lapse recording. The built-in Wi-Fi enables remote control via the Wi-Fi Remote (sold separately). It also supports live video preview and remote control from your smartphone or tablet with the free GoPro app. Besides the waterproof housing, the HERO3: Silver Edition ships with two adhesive mounts, a three-way pivot arm, two buckles, assorted mounting hardware and a USB charging cable.

The GoPro HERO3: Black Edition is the new top GoPro camera model. It is also Wi-Fi enabled, but it has a 12-megapixel image sensor with 2x better low-light performance. The camera also has the same 6-element wide angle aspherical lens as the HERO3: Silver Edition, but it can support up to 4Kp resolution video. It can also capture 2.7Kp, 1440p, 1080p, 960p, 720p and 480p video up to an impressive 240 fps for high-speed action and impressive slow motion playback. Unlike the Silver Edition, The HERO3: Black Edition includes the Wi-Fi Remote.

The ports and interfaces are the same on both camera models and the HERO3: Black Edition supports all the advanced shooting features that the HERO3: Silver Edition features. However, it also supports continuous photo shooting and burst photography at up to 30 fps. It features picture in video, which lets you simultaneously record video while shooting photos at 5, 10, 30 and 60 second intervals and it works with the GoPro app as well, which facilitates live video preview and remote camera control via a smartphone or tablet. Besides the Wi-Fi Remote, the HERO3: Black Edition includes the same accessories as the HERO3: Silver Edition. Both models are compatible with all current GoPro mounts and accessories.

A handful of new accessories have also been announced by GoPro, including the LCD Touch BacPac and the Battery BacPac. The LCD Touch BacPac is a removable LCD touch screen that seamlessly attaches to your GoPro HERO3 camera, as well as some older GoPro models (there is limited compatibility with the original HD HERO and HD HERO2). The touch screen LCD affords preview and instant playback of photos or video. It also facilitates visual control of the camera and camera settings. The LCD Touch BacPac is equipped with an integrated speaker, volume control button and a 3.5mm headphone jack for more accurate audio monitoring. The new Battery BacPac is compatible with all GoPro cameras as well. It attaches to the back of your camera and it doubles the camera’s standard battery life. It’s the ideal accessory if you shoot video over long durations, like time-lapse recording.

The GoPro Frame Mount is another new accessory. It is a low-profile frame that features specific engineering so your audio still sounds great – even at high speeds. The Frame Mount is compatible with the HERO3, as well as the LCD Touch BacPac and the Battery BacPac. It comes with a lens cap, one flat adhesive mount, one curved adhesive mount and assorted mounting hardware.

Other accessory announcements from GoPro include the Wi-Fi Remote and the Wi-Fi Remote Attachment Keys + Ring Set. The Wi-Fi Remote is compatible with the HERO3 camera. It features a shutter button, a power/mode/select button and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The Wi-Fi Remote is depth rated to 10’ (3 m) and it has a 600’ (180m) transmission range. One Wi-Fi Remote can control up to 50 GoPro cameras at a time. It provides access to all your GoPro camera settings and it includes one removable attachment key ring as well. For attaching the Wi-Fi Remote to several different articles of clothing and gear, GoPro also released the Wi-Fi Attachment Key + Ring Set, which makes it easy to attach the Wi-Fi Remote to your car keys, clothing and gear.  The last new announcement is for a 3.5mm mic adapter which connects any external 3.5mm microphone to your HERO3 camera.

Is there a zoom function on the hero3+ silver edition?

Hi Kris -

None of the GoPro cameras offer an optical zoom lens.  The lens is a wide-angle, fixed  focus f/2.8 aperture type.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:

Is there a night view or a flash to record in the dark?

The is no internal flash or night mode built in.

I need to shott 72 hours of continuous footage, absolutley no there a way to do this?

Hello Chuck -

We and GoPro do not recommend continuous operation of these action cameras.  There is no continuous power supply designed for the GoPro family of cameras that GoPro endorses.. Any third party supply may void your warranty. Proceed with care.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:

Is there any way to have a flash for a gopro?

Unfortunately, the GoPro Hero3+ doesn’t have a hot shoe or a way to trigger a flash.  If you are looking for underwater lighting, Fantasea does make the BlueRay Radiant Underwater Video Light Kit with Tray / Flex Arm for GoPro Camera, though.

Does the go pro auto focus? So if I set it up on a tracking camera following a tracking band, would it auto focus on the moving object? I'm looking at the Aime tracker thats coming out and a camera that can be set up to film video but would like it to auto focus

Kim Evans

Hi Kim -

This action camera does not offer auto focus.  The lens is a fixed-focus wide angle.

Some wired remote?!!!
Especially for diving...
Many thanks if this is possible soon!

I want to get one so bad but i want to know if have flash?
Thank u

Is there a way to transfer/upload videos from the Hero 3 (silver edition) to an iPad Air? I tried the camera cable and I get the error that says the camera device does not have enough power - meaning it has to be connected to a power source, which is not possible. Will the GoPro app allow you to download videos, or is it just for viewing?

Does it float if it's fumbled away underwater?

Does this have a zooming feature like on a regular camcorder?

Hi -

The GoPro Hero 3 series action cams are fixed focus, single focal length cameras.  Their lenses will not zoom.

How to playback HERO3 Black videos to Samsung TAB2 7.0 for most convenient travelling? With micro-SD in the TAB the sound is good but movie becomes discrete pictures! Don't like to bring PC for file format conversion.

Hello Hans -

You will need a PC to upload the videos and then sideload them to the tablet for viewing while traveling.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:

Currently the Hero 3 black edition has a serious software problem with the one button mode. Keep in mind if you get this cam, you wont be able to use it until GoPro issues a Firmware update for it.

I'm not sure what system you are running on but my update and firmware works perfectly through my MAC. Sorry You are having problems

Hi, I´m interested in using the GoPro black to be able to record when diving. Is there any possibility to shift between photo and video when the camera is inside the waterproof housing? I suppose the wifi does´nt work under water..

We contacted GoPro Tech support and confirmed the housing has three buttons that could be accessed through the housing:

1.Mode button
2.Shutter, used to shoot stills, start and stop video and select a mode.
3.Wi-Fi, you could turn the Wi-Fi on or off in the housing.

-The default is video. Press the mode button once and it goes to photo mode. You than press the shutter button to select.
-Press the mode button twice and it goes to burst photo mode.
-Press three times and you get time interval photo mode.
-Press four times you end up in settings.
-Five times brings you back to video.

I brought go pro hero3 in Australia and thought it would be on the Australian setting of pal and not NTSC . However this was not the case. I used it for a special skiing trip to Japan and now don't know haw to convert NTSC to pal. Please help

Can you see playback via the App on a smartphone or just preview and camera control?
Thanks :)

Could you help me to find system of fixation macro lens for Gopro3

Hello Thelsica -

GoPro does not offer a macro lens at this time.  There appears to be several DIY macro lens conversions and adaptations that may void the manufacturer's warranty. Unfortunately I cannot recommend them. Please proceed with caution if you decide to experiment with 3rd party solutions.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:

Is there anyway to run a constant power supply to the Hero 3 in the waterproof housing? If not can it be done with any other mount?

We can't get the simultaneous video and photo function to work on the Hero 3 Black Edition. We've followed the instructions and the correct resolution settings, but we get a message saying this resolution is not supported.
Can you help?

Hi Janet -

Simultaneous Video and Photo mode allows you to simultaneously capture
both Videos and Photos. You can set the camera to take a Photo every 5
seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds or 60 seconds while you record Video.
To set your camera to Picture In Video Mode verify that a supported Video
resolution is selected and that Protune is turned OFF.

***Note: You can capture Simultaneous Video and Photo in one of the following
resolution settings: 1080p 24 fps, 1080p 30 fps, 720p 60fps or 1440p 24 fps.

Be sure that you have downloaded the current firmware supports:

Im a scuba diving and I've been reading up on the GoPro hero 3 to take scuba diving. But correct me if I'm wrong, the camera doesn't have a flash or a port to attach a waterproof flash so it's not ideal for taking photos at deeper depths?

Great stuff! Black edition of hero3 is the best Xmass gift for me!

Hello Michelle -

This camera is built for extreme use and will perform flawlessly underwater to record your SCUBA activities  down to a depth of 197' (60 m). The sound quality from the built-in mic is mediocre, but OK for most applications since it is the point-of-view action that grabs you.  An 3.5mm (1/8") external mic input is available to upgrade the audio.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:

If you take it scuba diving, invest into filters for anything over 10'. Works great. Had mine in Cozumel last week. Lots of fun.

Can you please tell me, when this product will be available. I have already pre-ordered it, so I want to know the date???

What is Looping Record (Video)?

Has a lux rating for the HERO3 Black Edition been released? 2x better seems a little vague.

So What's the angel of view of the lens? Most small video cams tend to look too much like a fish-eye.

I was just wondering if this or any Hero edition cam has o lux capability`s Night Vision?

Nope. Best for low light looks to be the new Hero3 Black.

Hello Luis -

GoPro doe not offer night vision or IR recording on any of their current camera offerings.  GoPro has rated their cameras as low as 0.84 (V/lux-sec) which means you could potentially shoot under moonlight.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:

There is a service that modifies the Hero cameras for night vision as well as daytime filters. It's NOPS LABS on facebook.
