Iogear's Universal Wi-Fi N Adapter

If you own a TV set, games console, DVR, Blu-ray Disc player, computer or other device with an Ethernet jack but prefer to connect it to your home network wirelessly without necessarily buying a USB Wi-Fi dongle that works only with a particular product, the new Universal Wi-Fi N Adapter from Iogear is a promising solution. B&H is offering $5 instant savings on the adapter through Aug. 31, 2011.

The little black box with embedded dual antennas comes with an Ethernet cable for linking it to your device. Unlike a USB Wi-Fi dongle, the Iogear adapter requires power. Iogear supplies both an AC adapter and a mini USB cable so you can choose to plug into an electrical outlet or a powered USB port on your device.

The Iogear Universal Wi-Fi N Adapter  is 802.11b/g/n compatible. On an N-type network, the adapter supports speeds up to 150 Megabits per second. Atop the adapter is a WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button that lets you complete the network installation quickly and securely. WEP, TKIP, AES, WPA and WPS2 encryption schemes are supported. Iogear describes the adapter as “plug and play,” meaning that no drivers are required. The adapter is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems if you plan to attach it to a PC.

Of course, you need a Wi-Fi router or access point somewhere in your home to use the Iogear Universal Wi-Fi N Adapter. But the adapter may be enough of a reason to put in a Wi-Fi network in homes where entertainment equipment in the living room, a gaming system in the den or a TV in the bedroom isn’t already connected by a wired network.
