In the past year, Mackie has given the process of live sound mixing a very futuristic twist. Combining their expertise in analog mixers with excellent digital audio conversion and iPad-driven operation, the DL Series mixers would have been right at home on Hanna-Barbera's animated TV series, The Jetsons. The latest model in this series, the DL806, is premiering this week at NAMM 2013.
The DL806 is an 8-channel digital mixer that features Onyx mic preamps, Cirrus Logic converters, four aux sends and a high headroom design. It has four XLR inputs and four combo XLR/TRS inputs, four 1/4” TRS sends and a stereo pair of XLR main outputs. Phantom power is globally switchable and each channel has an independent gain control. There is also an adjustable volume headphone output.
The remainder of the DL806’s functionality takes place in the digital domain. The Apple iPad can either be mounted (and charged) on the mixer’s body or used remotely over Wi-Fi. The mixing/DSP system is controlled by the free Master Fader app. Each channel can be shaped and optimized with a 4-band EQ, gate and compressor. Global reverb and delay can be applied, but even more useful, a 31-band graphic EQ plug-in can be employed to tune the entire mix to the room. Additionally, a mix buss compressor/limiter can also be used to glue the mix together and protect your external amplifier(s) and speakers.
Additional iOS features include support for iPhone and iPod Touch with the free My Fader app. The Mackie apps also give you the ability to integrate audio from any other app into your mix. The iPad can save and recall custom channel and mix presets, and even record your live mix for instant sharing/distribution.
With any shiny new piece of gear, not to mention one that incorporates an iPad, there’s always the fear of theft. Luckily, Mackie has your back! A feature called PadLock can lock your iPad in place permanently. The integrated Kensington lock protects the entire mixer from tampering, in permanent installs.
Mackie has really opened up a whole new world of functionality to touring bands and small venues with the DL Series Mixers. The larger model, the DL1608, is currently in stock at the B&H SuperStore… and the new DL806 will surely be arriving soon after it’s released to the public.
