Shure has just announced two new models in its SRH series of professional headphones: the SRH1440 and SRH1840. These headphones are designed for critical listening and mastering purposes, and are ideal for use in studios. Each set has 40mm neodymium drivers that provide full-range audio with plenty of bass. The drivers in the SRH1840 are individually matched to deliver an even more impressive acoustic experience. The SRH1840 also offers steel driver frames with vented center pole pieces for improved linearity and reduced internal resonance.
Both sets of headphones have an open-back circumaural design. This allows for proper airflow and creates a natural sonic response with greater accuracy and more depth than closed-back headphones. The thick, replaceable cushions are made from slow-recovery foam and have velour covers that fit around your ears to provide long-term comfort, while the adjustable headbands offer a snug and secure fit. The SRH1840 has a dual-frame headband design to reduce weight.
Each set of headphones has a detachable Y-style cable that has gold-plated MMCX connectors for a secure connection and easy replacement. The cables are made from oxygen-free copper and have Kevlar-reinforced jackets for top-quality performance and durability. Each set has a slightly different optimization: the SRH1440 offers an impedance level that’s ideal for direct connection with a portable device such as an MP3 player or smartphone, while the SRH1840 is better suited for use with a separate headphone amplifier. Each model has a standard 3.5mm plug and a threaded ¼" adapter for compatibility with a wide variety of devices.
The SRH1840 has stainless steel grilles and an aircraft-grade aluminum yoke that provide excellent durability while keeping the weight down. It weighs almost 3 ounces less than the SRH1440, which uses a frame primarily made of steel. Both models are individually tested and serialized to ensure the very best durability and audio quality. Each comes with the aforementioned plug adapter, a replacement cable, a set of replacement ear cushions, and a hard zippered storage case. The headphones are backed by a 2-year warranty. They are expected to arrive at B&H sometime in February.
