New Sony HDR-GW77V Handycam Loves Adventure

Summer’s just about here, and you’ll soon be ramping up your travel and outdoor activities. If you’re looking for a camcorder or still camera that’s easy to travel with, and one that doesn’t mind going wherever you do, consider Sony’s new HDR-GW77V Handycam; it’s waterproof, shockproof and dustproof. It offers full HD 60p recording, 20.4MP still image capture, a 3-inch touch screen and 16GB of internal flash memory, which is enough to record up to 4 hours of video in HD LP mode—this means no fumbling with memory cards unless you feel so inclined. If you need more storage space, the camcorder also features Memory Stick Micro and Micro SD/SDHC card slots.

Easy to transport, the HDR-GW77V measures only 1.27 inches wide by 4.15 inches high by 2.76 inches deep (3.22 x 10.55 x 7.02 cm) and weighs less than 8 ounces with the battery installed, so it will easily fit in your pocket or carry-on bag. And it doesn’t matter if your destination is cold and icy, tropical and humid, hot and dusty or even underwater, as the HDR-GW77V is waterproof to a depth of 16 feet, shockproof from falls of up to 5 feet and impervious to dirt and dust. The camcorder’s 3 inch touch screen even works under water.

If you’re not a professional videographer or even a tech-savvy individual, fret not, because the HDR-GW77V is very easy to use. The camcorder features a 17x extended zoom that works in conjunction with 10x optical zoom to pull faraway subjects into view. The back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor’s low-light sensitivity offers improved image clarity with reduced grain, and the Optical SteadyShot image stabilization delivers smooth video throughout the entire zoom range. A 3-way shake-canceling system adds electronic roll stability to help capture smooth video even while jogging, swimming or square dancing. When there’s just not enough light with which to shoot stills, the camcorder’s built-in flash will brighten things up.

Other neat features of the HDR-GW77V include Golf Shot, which captures a few seconds of motion as a sequence of still images, up to 22 of them, which can be viewed or printed individually or as a composite sequential image to help analyze a golf swing or other sports maneuver. Tracking Focus is an extension of face detection, and it lets you select an object by touching the LCD; the object will then stay in focus even if it exits and returns to the frame. There are 99 different combinations of Intelligent Auto to choose from, with a newly developed underwater mode.

Don’t worry if your travels bring you to so many locations that it’s hard to keep track of where you’ve been, because the camcorder’s built-in GPS and geotagging function can display a map of your current location on the LCD and tag your shooting locations for permanent record. The GPS receiver also automatically adjusts the camcorder's clock to the proper time zone so you won’t have to. The HDR-GW77V is available in black, blue, or white.

Where can I purchase this camera? It has all the specs I need but I can't find it anywhere.

Hi StaceeJane -

Unfortunately this camera was discontinued by SONY some time ago. It is no longer in production and not available at B&H.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:

Questions of HDR GW 77v:
1. 64gb or 128 gb are compatible? they mention up to 32gb (operation verified)does that means that they garuantee 32 gb to work but larger ones can work?,
2. whats the best video format getting the best of the cam and not eatting up all the space that you got in a 40 minutes video ex. 60p (well if it reads the big sdhc cards problem is solved), the 16gb installed is not that bad but 3gb are for maps so..
My experience / conclusion:
rather than that ill reccomend this toy to everyone its a breakthrough in tech and i am in love to a degree that i am not planning to buy any other camera for the time being.the shrinking of the sensor (exmor plus G lence!!) ending up with such a tiny monster and the low light performance results is amazing and guess what you can dive dive dive with it too :)

Is the hdr-gw77v compatible with iMovie HD 6.0.4?

Hi it is so small ,that even hard to hold in hend and make a shots. Also sometimes it doesn't turning on when I I shoud push the sd cart and battary out and in. After that it is going on. Shoud I come over to shop? Thenk you.

Hi, Is there a lens cover for this camcorder otherwise it will get scratched?

no microphone input? This is the most frustrating. Even at $700 no one wants to put a microphone input jack? That makes for crappy videos unless it's baby shots or pet shots around the house. You'd think something like this could be used for interviews or even a lapel mic.

hi, anyone care to comment on low light quality (for for video)

I want one.... How does it fare in low light?

Is the video format that this camera uses compatible with Apple's Final Cut Pro X?

I was thinking about purchasing the CX580V, but the GW77V has really caught my eye. My primary use will be for outdoor adventures (backpacking, kayaking, etc..), so the waterproof/dustproof/shockproof is really appealing to me.

Does it offer the same shallow depth of field that you can achieve with the CX580V? And, can you do the slow motion video?

Can you mount this camera on a tripod?
