0Share

Nikon has just announced updates to many of its already excellent digital cameras. If you were considering an older model, fear not—Nikon has simply added some handy new features to the lineup as well as ergonomic enhancements that should be welcomed by all. Let’s see what’s being offered.

Nikon Coolpix S30

The Nikon Coolpix S30 is the perfect knockaround camera that anybody in the family can use. We say knockaround because in addition to taking fuss-free pictures, the Coolpix S30 is waterproof to 9.8’ (3m) beneath the waves and shock proof from falls of 2.6’ (0.8m).

The Coolpix S30 has a 10.1MP CCD imaging sensor, a 3x 24-85mm equivalent zoom lens (approximate), a 2.7" 230,000-dot LCD, one-touch 720p HD video with sound, a top ISO of 1600, an electronic VR image stabilization system, and a selection of Scene modes that include Point-and-Shoot, Underwater, Interval shooting, Highlight Color, Diorama (Miniature) Effects, Close-ups, and a Food mode.

The Coolpix S30 also includes an extensive selection of pre-capture Special Effect filters that include Soft Focus, Selective Color and Miniature. There are also a bunch of post-capture effects that can be added after the fact that include Cross Screen, Fisheye and special-effect colors.

Nikon’s Coolpix S30 is powered by a set of AA batteries, which are good for about 240 exposures per set; it contains about 47MB of internal memory, accepts SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, and is available in a choice of white, pink, and blue.

Optical VR Image Stabilization helps ensure a sharp focus even at the telephoto end of the zoom range. Speaking of zoom, the camera features a wide angle 4.2x optical zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8.

Special effects modes featured in the Coolpix P310 include Soft Focus, Sepia, High Key, Low Key, High Contrast Monochrome, Selective Color, Painting, Silhouette and High ISO Monochrome. When it comes time to review what you’ve captured, you can see it quite clearly on the 3-inch, 921,000 dot LCD monitor. Nikon Coolpix S9300

If you want a pocket-size point and shoot that rivals the feature set and image quality of much larger cameras, the Coolpix S9300 should be the camera of choice. The camera is built around a 16-megapixel CMOS image sensor, but its most awesome feature is the 18x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length 25-450mm. Optical VR Image Stabilization helps capture sharp images, which can be challenging with such a powerful zoom.

Of course the S9300 can record full HD 1080 video with stereo sound, and it can display that video on an HDTV set via the camera’s HDMI output. But you’ll enjoy viewing content nearly as much on the camera’s 3-inch 921,000-dot LCD monitor. If you want to tweak your content you can take advantage of in-camera effects such as Low Key, High Key, Sepia and Selective Color. A high-speed burst mode allows the continuous shooting of seven shots at full resolution in about one second. Other features include an Easy Panorama Mode, Subject Tracking and a Smart Portrait System. In addition, built-in GPS records your shooting location, logs routes and displays your present location and points of interest on a map. The camera features 26MB of internal memory and also accepts SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.

To complement the camera’s super  zoom lens, the Coolpix L810 features a 16.1 CCD imaging sensor, and a 3.0-inch, detail-baring 921,000-dot LCD.

Along with sharp, colorful stills, the Coolpix L810 can also capture 720p HD video with stereo sound. Other features found on Nikon’s Coolpix L810 include alternative color options, a selection of 19 Scene modes, a Smart Portrait System, an Optical VR image stabilization system for sharper results, and the ability to capture 3D imagery, which is viewable on 3D HDTV using the camera’s HDMI connection.

Nikon’s Coolpix L810 has about 50MB of internal memory, is powered by a set of four AA batteries for up to 300 exposures per set, accepts SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, and is available in a choice of black, red and blue.

Nikon Coolpix P510

When it comes time to break out the big guns, at least as far as zooming is concerned, you’ll want to reach for the Coolpix P510. Heavier and larger than the pocket-size models, the P510 features an incredible 42x zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-1000mm. With such a powerful zoom, it makes sense that the P510 also features Optical VR Image Stabilization to lessen the effects of camera shake. The big beautiful lens hands off images to a 16.1MP CMOS image sensor and EXPEED C2 image processing engine. From there images are passed on to the camera’s 90MB of internal storage or whatever SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card you’ve installed.

The P510 can capture full HD 1080p video with continuous AF and stereo sound, and you have the option of recording slow- or fast-motion video if you like. You can watch your HD footage on any HDTV via the camera’s HDMI output. Use the 3-inch ultra-high-resolution (921,000 dot) Vari-angle LCD monitor to photograph in the most unconventional positions. Of course you can also view your footage on the camera’s 3-inch 921,000 dot LCD monitor. The camera can keep track of your travels and shooting locations with its built-in GPS. A map display shows your present location and can highlight points of interest that you won’t want to miss.
