Streaming to a Samsung TV Near You: Shows in 3D

Acceptance of 3D TV has been hindered by the limited number of 3D Blu-ray titles and dearth of content from cable operators. Now, Samsung hopes to jumpstart the platform by introducing a dedicated app for its Internet-connected plasma and LED-LCD HDTVs.

The Explore 3D application is available now on every 2011 and 2010 Plasma Smart 3D TV and LED Smart 3D TV set from Samsung. Once viewers initiate an account on a computer, they can use the TV remote to play dozens of different programs in high-def 3D from Samsung’s SmartHub onscreen menu. Initially, the content is free and includes trailers from such studios as DreamWorks Animation, educational programs, music videos and full-length TV shows from Wealth TV.

Explore 3D plans to make available on-demand 3D content you pay for later this year. According to Samsung, viewers will have access to Hollywood movies and shorts as well as documentaries in 3D. The app uses the RoxioNow platform.

B&H offers 26 Samsung connected 3D TV models ranging in screen sizes from 40- to 64-inches. If you’re browsing TVs on the B&H shopping site, you can narrow the search results by checking both the “3D” and “Internet Enabled” boxes under Features. (See sample image from the B&H shopping site.)
