Carrying out triple duty as a pocket projector, supplemental battery and stand for any iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod touch), the Pico Power Projector II from MiLi is a multi-purpose accessory that fits under the just-might category. Your phone, tablet or media player just might run out of power when you can least afford it; you just might want to show your video or photos to more people than can readily fit around a little screen; you just might want to use your hands for purposes other than holding the phone. It just might make your life a little easier.
As a projector, the newly arrived Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) device throws a VGA (640 x 480) image against any light-colored surface. According to the company, the picture can be adjusted in size from 5 to 70 inches.
The upper measurement is somewhat optimistic. Rated for 10 lumens of brightness, the projected image will appear faint if you choose to enlarge it much beyond about 25 inches. Of course, it helps to be in a pitch-black room. By comparison, a typical home theater projector is rated in the high hundreds to thousands of lumens; even for pico projectors, a 10-lumen specification is now deemed on the low end. Still, if you’re using an iOS device’s camera, being able to project instant video playback or slideshows to a small audience is worth its weight in on-the-spot convenience. A 2-watt mono speaker is built in for sharing the sound.
The MiLi Pico Power Projector II’s illumination source is an LED meant for 20,000 hours of use. Though the projector’s dock connector is the way to acquire the sound and picture from an iOS device, there’s also an A/V mini input for other types of devices such as a portable DVD player or set-top box. If you’re using the dock connector for the projector’s video source, you can pass the signal out from the mini AV jack. (Cables such as the Mini AV to 3 RCA Composite Cable from Hosa Technology are not included.)
When your iOS device is inserted in the projector’s dock—but the projector is not turned on—you can double the battery life of your iPhone or iPod Touch or extend the life of your iPad or iPad 2 before it requires recharging. Since the projector weighs only 0.3 lb, taking it along for use strictly as battery backup is not unreasonable.
As an adjustable easel, the Pico Power Projector II can accommodate any iOS device for tabletop placement, freeing you up to handle other things.
