Xtreme Recording with the JVC ADIXXION Action Camcorder

JVC has recently announced a new action camera, the GC-XA1 ADIXXION, which is designed specifically to go wherever you want to go while you do whatever you want to do. This small camcorder is ruggedly designed to withstand water, freezing temperatures and impacts while providing you with high definition 1080/30p video and 5-megapixel stills of your adventures. Even more, this camera features built-in Wi-Fi support so you can share your images with the world before having to retreat home.

5MP CMOS Sensor and HD Video

Considering the stature of this camera, its ability to provide full HD 1080/30p or 720/60p videos and 5MP stills is quite impressive. The CMOS sensor provides smooth image quality in a wide range of lighting conditions. Due to the hands-off nature of using this camera, the exposure settings are controlled automatically—providing you with worry-free operation. However, tuning of the white balance can be done automatically or manually, which allows you to adjust the overall look and feel of your recordings.

In addition to straight video and still-image recording, the ADIXXION also features a time lapse recording mode which can record images at intervals of 1 or 5 seconds. Video files are output as Web-friendly MP4 files while still images are saved in the JPEG file format.

The built-in lens has a very wide angle of view at 170°, which lends itself perfectly to a fixed-focus design. The wide focal length assures that essentially everything in front of the camera remains in focus and provides enough room for less-than-critical framing, which is quite necessary since you won’t be monitoring your footage live very often while using this camera. However, there is 5x digital zoom available for those times when you want to record more of what is in front of you rather than what is right next to you. Digital image stabilization has also been integrated into the camera, which keeps your images sharp and clear regardless of how bumpy your ride may be.

Durable and Rugged Design

The ADIXXION camcorder features an incredibly lightweight and compact design, yet has robust styling to keep it fully functional after heavy use. The camera is waterproof up to depths of approximately 16.5 feet, shockproof from 6.5-foot falls and resistant against dust and freezing temperatures. All of this ruggedness is also based on the camera body itself—no external housings are required. The body construction incorporates a rubberized, scratch-proof material which further adds to the solid handling of the camera. For playback and review of your videos and stills, a 1.5-inch LCD monitor is built into the side of the camera body.

Furthering the utilitarian model of design, two separate tripod sockets are integrated into the camera body and two different mounts are also included—a goggle mount and a flexible mount. The goggle mount easily attaches the camera to a goggle strap, allowing you to wear the camera on your head. This positioning will simulate point-of-view style recording, allowing viewers to have a similar experience to yours, during playback. The flexible mount provides a greater range of surfaces to which you can bind the camera. This mount is composed of a mini ball head and base, with 3M double-sided tape, for mounting to the flat or curved surface of your choice. The flexible mount is preferred for placing your camera on the roof of your car, your surfboard or your helmet. There are also two optional mounting accessories— a handlebar mount and roll-bar mount—for even greater recording possibilities. Both include a ring-like apparatus for attaching to the bars of your bicycle, motorbike, ATV or UTV. Additionally, expect even more mounting solutions, including suction cups and a mount for attaching the ADIXXION to another camera, to be released in the future.

Built-In Wi-Fi and Wireless Connections

For increased ease of use and sharing functionality, built-in Wi-Fi support has been integrated into the camera, which allows you to connect and share to a wide variety of sources and sites.

Even before functionally recording, you can preview and frame your shot directly on your smartphone with a free app available for iOS and Android platforms. This app permits you to view a live image on your phone from your mounted camera, perfect for adjusting the composition or white balance settings when the camera is mounted in locations from which you cannot easily view the LCD. Wi-Fi support also makes it possible to stream or share images directly to a computer or mobile hotspot, which can then be easily transferred to social networking sites. If you prefer to cut out the middle step of logging footage to your computer, you can also directly stream HD video in real time to USTREAM. The ADIXXION includes an in-camera, Windows-compatible software called Wi-Video, which lets you wirelessly stream your videos to a PC and/or to the Web. You can also transfer your files via the camera’s USB port or watch your movies and images directly on an HD television via the HDMI mini port.

The ADIXXION is the perfect accompaniment to your active lifestyle—it’s a small, highly functional camcorder providing HD video and stills; its wireless interface works well with the fast-paced lifestyle this camera is geared for and features a plethora of options for sharing your imagery. All of these features are well-contained within a durable shell, providing plenty of protection from the elements and truly allowing the camera to be brought along on any adventure.

I purschased the upgrade verison GC-XA2 and can't seem to get the Ustream option to work. I am able to use the app and login to my Ustream account but then the stream never seems to start nor can I verify it on the Ustream page. Utream says it must be the camera. Please let me know as I need to  stream a video tomorrow. Thanks.

Hi William -

Be sure that the app is downloaded:

Be sure to download the latest firmware updates for more reliable streaming performance.

does this camera have continuous loop video recording and can it be powered through the car's cigarette lighter? Can the camera switch on automatically when the car is started and switch off automatically when the car has stopped and engine turned off?
am thinking of using it as a high quality dash mount cam for the car

I am wondering if there are exterior microphone capabilities for conducting interviews, for better audio?

I am woundering if the shock proof will stand up to mounting on a 12 ga shot gun for deer hunting videos

Hello Jon -

The shock rating is 6.5' (2 m) MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5-Shock.  The camera can be dropped from about 6.5 feet onto a hard surface (like pavement) and will continue to work - although it may be sustain some cosmetic damage.  The recoil of a shotgun may not have any profound effect on the camera's functionality if it is securely clamped.  That said - this tough little camera has not been tested in this manner.

MIL-STD-810F 516.5 also often appears in ruggedness specs. This tests a device's ability to survive a variety of impacts and shocks. MIL-STD-810F Method 516.5 defines the purpose of the shock test to "provide a degree of confidence that materiel can physically and functionally withstand the relatively infrequent, non-repetitive shocks encountered in handling, transportation, and service environments."

Bear in mind that the MIL-STD-810F is a very comprehensive document. As a result, a statement saying a device is "MIL-STD-810F tested" doesn't provide enough information. The MIL-STD-810F is an almost 600 page document with tests for about two dozen things that can affect a piece of equipment.

I am interested in the performance of this camera. How does it compare to GoPro Hero2 as far as Image quality. I know it's easy enough to compare specs but real life performance and IQ are important to me.

Anyone done a thorough review?
