Most photographers keep their camera safely suspended by a protective neck strap, ensuring that they don’t drop it. They go wherever they have to in order to get the shot they’re after. But some photographers have to operate multiple cameras, sometimes mounted far out of reach, triggering them remotely when the time is right. The Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Remote Switch lets these photographers trigger their cameras and capture the shots they need.
When shooting sporting events, wildlife behavior, and other unusual activities, photographers often need to set cameras high up on rigs, hidden in trees and in other strategic locations such as various points around a racetrack. It’s not always practical, safe, or possible for the photographer, or even multiple photographers, to be within reach of every camera. That’s when remote triggers become incredibly handy.
Assuming a camera is in position to catch the action, the Vello Wireless ShutterBoss Remote Switch can control it from a distance. The ShutterBoss is a 2.4 GHz FSK transmitter/receiver pair that works on 99 different channels with no DIP switches to set. One could conceivably control up to 99 individual cameras, or 99 groups of cameras, at distances of up to 250 feet. There’s also one universal channel, allowing everything to be triggered at once for test or other purposes.
Not only can the ShutterBoss trigger a shutter wirelessly, it can also control the number of continuous shutter releases to be triggered, from 1 to 99, as well as various timer functions including self-timer, interval timer, and long-exposure timer. Timer delays, exposure times and intervals can be set for up to 99 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds, in one-second increments. A delayed-release function gives you time to get into position if that's your need. Just like the cameras themselves, the ShutterBoss transmitter has a dual-function release button that you press halfway to focus and all the way to trigger the shutter. LED indicators on the transmitter confirm pre-focus and exposure.
The ShutterBoss works in temperatures ranging from -4° to 122°F. The transmitter measures 5.9 x 2 x 1 inches in size and is powered by two AAA batteries, which can last up to four years on standby. The tiny receiver measures only 2.5 x 1.5 x 1.2 inches in size and is powered by a CR2 lithium battery.
The ShutterBoss is extremely versatile, as it can work with dozens of different camera models. It’s sold as a transmitter/receiver pair, along with a camera release cable that works with specific camera models.
