B&H Gear News Roundup: November 7, 2014

The holidays are just around the corner and B&H has you covered with awesome stuff for every member of the family, including some new items that were just announced this week!

This week in the news:

Kodak PIXPRO SP360 Action Cam

It's not often we get to start off a gear review with the name most easily associated with photography, but the Kodak PIXPRO SP360 Action Cam has entered the rapidly crowding adventure camera market with some unique features.

First among those features making the SP360 stand apart from the competition is the ability to capture 360º photographs and 1080p HD video. Other creative shooting options include ring, dome, front and rear 180º photos, panorama, and globe. The 16MP sensor allows 10MP still photos and a variety of video formats and frame rates.

Plug the camera in using USB, HDMI, or connect wirelessly to its Wi-Fi signal to upload your images.

The SP360 is sold by itself, or hit the trail, water, or track running by picking up the bundled comprehensive accessory packages—Explorer Pack, Aqua Sport Pack, and the Extreme Pack.

Drift Stealth 2 Action Camera

Did I just mention that the Action Cam market is getting crowded? The Drift Stealth 2 Action Camera presents another unique design and feature set for the adrenaline junkies of the world. Lighter than its predecessor, the Stealth 2 gives its users full HD 1080p video, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a rugged, water-resistant body.

Rare in the action-cam genre, the Stealth 2 allows you to rotate the lens to optimize your composition. Instead of being stuck at the angle your mount gives you, a ring on this camera allows you to adjust your angle of view. Also setting the Stealth 2 apart is a field of view that is narrower than that of most action cams. Some may prefer a tighter shot for their adventures.

Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC, 12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC Fisheye, and 12mm T3.1 ED AS IF NCS UMC Cine DS Fisheye

One thing I really enjoy about Rokinon's lens portfolio is the tactile feel of the focus adjustments and aperture rings. Without the compromises dictated by autofocus motors, these lenses definitely have an "old-school" feel.

Rokinon has rolled out a trio of new lenses for a lot of today's popular camera mounts.

The new 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC is available in Canon EF, Nikon F, Pentax K, as well as Sony A and Sony E mounts. This manual-focus lens features one aspherical and one hybrid aspherical element in an all-metal barrel. A circular 8-blade diaphragm is designed to show great out-of-focus highlights.

The 12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC fisheye is made for Canon EF mount, Nikon F mount, Pentax K mount, and Sony A mount, and features a 180° field of view on full-frame cameras for an ultra-wide perspective of the world around you. Three ED elements, two aspherical elements, and nano-coatings indicate that this is a no-compromise lens.

Its brother, the 12mm T3.1 ED AS IF NCS UMC Cine DS Fisheye Lens, is designed with an eye on cinema cameras and DSLR movie making. Available for the Canon EF,Nikon F, Pentax K, Sony A, and Sony E mounts, the cine lens has its color formula calibrated with other Rokinon Cine DS lenses, T-stop aperture adjustments, a geared and de-clicked aperture ring and a geared focus adjustment.

Tascam DR-70D 4-Channel DSLR Recorder

If you have been out of touch for the past few years, you have missed out on the high-quality, high-definition-video capabilities of today's DSLR cameras. Once camera manufacturers realized that their sensors could capture more than just still images, the flood gates of accessibility and creativity opened.

Be forewarned, movie-making is a very different process than photography and you might find that you need a bevy of accessories to help your DSLR make the movies you want to make. One shortcoming of the DSLR movie-making experience is in audio recording. Most DSLR built-in microphones are not up to the task of serious cinema.

In order to help, you need dedicated microphones and the Tascam DR-70D 4-channel DSLR recorder. Designed to ride on or below your camera, the DR-70D steps up the sound for your video by recording up to 4 channels simultaneously, in various formats, on built-in microphones. Feel free to add your own mics to the equation with the DR-70D's XLR/TRS inputs and stereo jacks, too.

Drones, drones, drones. You cannot turn on the television these days without seeing or hearing about the technology. I'll skip my soap box about the term "drone," and tell you about the newest unmanned aerial camera platform at B&H today.
