Nikon Adds CFexpress Compatibility to D5, D850, and D500 Cameras

Nikon has announced a trio of firmware updates that will add much-anticipated CFexpress Type B memory card compatibility to its D5 (v1.40), D850 (v1.20), and D500 (v1.30) DSLR cameras. In addition to this performance boost, small updates have also been made to each camera, as well.

With the new update installed, D5 owners will be able to select the band (2.4 or 5 GHz) for the host SSID when connecting to wireless networks via a WT-6 or WT-5 wireless transmitter. It also fixes a bug that affected shutter release during certain instances when using photo live view. Download the D5 update here.

D850 owners will also receive fixes for several minor bugs pertaining to presenting aperture values for non-CPU lenses, display issues when working with external recorders, and display issues when shooting in silent live view. Download the D850 update here.

Hi, there!

I'd like to know: if I upgrade the firmware version of my D850 to C 1.2.0 will the camera work with both card types: XQD and CFExpress Type B?

Thanks for your time.

Best regards

Paulo Ricardo Ferreira

Yes.  By updating the firmware in your Nikon D850 DSLR camera from “C” Firmware Version 1.11 to 1.20, it adds support for use with CFexpress cards (Type B).  As the Nikon D850 was natively compatible for use with SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II) and XQD memory cards on the camera's release, updating the firmware would make it compatible for you to use both CFexpress Type B memory cards and XQD memory cards in the "Slot 2" memory card slot inside the camera.

I upgraded my D850 to firmware version C 1.20 and it still does not recognize my CFexpress Type B Card.

Why?  Do I still need to flip some switch somewhere in the menu?

I am sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your camera.  If the firmware is installed correctly, there should be no need to do anything else for the CFexpress Type B memory card to work inside the Nikon D850 DSLR camera.    The link below is the link from Nikon USA's website indicating the CFexpress Type B memory cards that have been tested and approved for use in the Nikon D850 DSLR Camera with firmware C: Ver 1.20 or later:
