Available for pre-order, Tamron's SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens is the latest release in the new SP series of fast, image-stabilized primes. Often thought of as an ideal focal length for portraiture, this short telephoto lens employs a bright maximum aperture for extensive control over depth of field, as well as to suit working in low-light conditions. Its optical design features one low-dispersion element and one extra-low-dispersion element, which both help to suppress chromatic aberrations for improved color neutrality and accuracy. BBAR and eBAND coatings have also been applied to control lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Beyond the optical attributes, this prime is also characterized by 3.5-stop-effective Vibration Compensation (VC) to minimize the appearance of camera shake. A ring-type USD autofocus motor is also employed to achieve notably fast focusing performance, as well as full-time manual focus control. Additionally, the lens sports a weather-sealed design, including a fluorine coating on the front element, and it is compatible with the optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning focusing performance and updating lens firmware.

The SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD is available in Canon EF and Nikon F lens mounts and is also available without VC as the SP 85mm f/1.8 Di USD for the Sony A-mount.

Why would anyone choose this over the 85mm F1.8 Nikkor?

The Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD Lens would have the added benefit of Vibration Compensation (effective up to 3.5 stops) making handheld shooting in extreme low light even more possible. The Moisture-resistant construction incorporates seals around the lens mount and other areas to benefit working in inclement conditions as well. While these features may not appeal to all shooters, they do serve to provide some benefits over the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens.

This is a fixed focal length 85mm Prime lens.
