Unveiled: The Olympus PEN E-PL7 Mirrorless Camera + Black 12mm f/2.0 Lens

0Share

With the new PEN E-PL7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera leading the way, Olympus has announced a handful of new products and accessories. In addition to this replacement for the E-PL5 and E-PL6, Olympus has released a new body jacket for the E-PL 7 in three color variations and a new rechargeable lithium-ion battery for the camera. Also announced today is a new black version of the M.ZUIKO Digital ED 12mm f/2 Lens, which already exists in silver, and a new leather lens cover for the 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ pancake style lens, also in three color variations.

E-PL7 Mirrorless Digital Camera

The E-PL7 Mirrorless Digital Camera, which is available as Black or Silver body-only models, and as a Black Kit with black 14-42mm lens and as a Silver Kit with a silver 14-42mm lens, is a Micro Four Thirds format mirrorless camera that upgrades its predecessor with the TruePic VII Image Processor, built-in Wi-Fi and a high-resolution drop-down LCD. The new processor and 16MP Live MOS sensor provide the E-PL7 with sharp imaging, effective low-light capture and fast performance, including ISO to 25600 and 8 fps continuous shooting speed. Like the company's high-end OM-D series of cameras, the E-PL7 includes a three-axis in-body image stabilization system to reduce the blur caused by camera shake. Also, a fast 81-point autofocus grid covers the frame, enabling you to easily select the focus area that calls your creativity.

Focus can be established with just a tap of the camera’s 3.0" 1.04M-dot touchscreen LCD monitor. Indeed, shutter release and other camera settings can be controlled with a touch of the screen, and the LCD flips down 180° for easy self-portraits and simplified odd-angle shooting. The overall look of the E-PL7 is reminiscent of classic PEN film cameras and its brushed metal, leather wrapping, and dial-heavy top plate give this camera an elegant, retro feel. Furthermore, a large front-face handgrip and accessible buttons enable secure handling, especially when shooting selfies. The top plate is also home to the camera’s hot shoe for external flash or accessory mounting.

Full HD 1080 video capture is supported by the E-PL7 and an HDMI port enables a direct link to an HD-enabled TV for fast and fun viewing of your movies. Built-in Wi-Fi, along with the upgraded Olympus Image Share app, let you control your camera from your smartphone and transfer your images wirelessly for quick posting and geo-tagging. New Art Filters and Effects offer an extensive “Fun Quotient,” and the new Old Film Effect movie mode lets you get creative in video mode. In addition, HDR bracketing, Focus Peaking, Panning Scene Mode, Photo Story Mode, and Interval Shooting improve your overall imaging while offering creative options.

The M.ZUIKO Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R lens is bundled with the E-PL7 kits and offers the 35mm equivalent focal length of 28-84mm for versatile wide-angle to short telephoto perspectives. Three aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations for sharp, accurate images and the MSC autofocus drive provides near-silent AF adjustment, which is particularly important when shooting video.

To protect your E-PL7 and give it even more of a stylish flair, Olympus offers the CS-45B Body Jacket in Black, Brown or Light Brown. This genuine leather half-case holds snugly to the camera via its tripod mount, protecting against dust and scratches while leaving your lens free for shooting. Also available as a stand-alone accessory is the BLS-50 Lithium-Ion Battery. It is a secondary or replacement battery for the E-PL7, and offers a capacity of 1210mAh and 7.2V of output power.

M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f/2.0 Lens

Although it already exists in Silver, Olympus has released the impressive M.ZUIKO Digital ED 12mm f/2.0 lens in Black. This all-metal Micro Four Thirds format prime lens provides the 35mm equivalent focal length of 24mm, for a full array of wide-angle applications. Its f/2 maximum aperture is very effective in low light and offers shallow depth-of-field focus control. Combine this with its minimum focus distance of 7.9" and this lens will create images with sharp focus on the primary subject with gorgeous out-of-focus backgrounds. Its optical construction consists of DSA, aspherical, Super HR, and extra-low dispersion glass elements for effective control of aberrations and crisp, high-contrast imaging. The Olympus MSC autofocus system allows smooth and virtually silent AF performance, and a snap-ring design uncovers a distance scale and enables smooth manual focus control.

Olympus has also announced the LC-60.5GL Lens Cover for the 14-42mm EZ Lens in Black, Brown, or Light Brown. This genuine leather cover offers stylish protection for the pancake-styled M.ZUIKO Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ lens, which to be clear, is a distinct model from the 14-42mm lens offered in the above E-PL7 kit.
