Sony has further enhanced its already impressive lineup of Alpha a-Mount series optics with the addition of three new fixed focal length prime lenses—a Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm f/2 ZA SSM, DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM and a Sony 85mm f/2.8 SAM.
The Distagon T* designation of the new Distagon T* 24mm f/2 ZA SSM should already tip you off to the importance of this fast wide-angle addition to Sony's optical lineup. Usable with both full frame as well as APS-C format DSLRs from Sony (including Sony NEX-series digicams), the Distagon T* 24mm f/2 ZA SSM contains 9 elements in 7 groups (including 2 ED and 2 aspherical elements), features a Sony Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM), and can focus down to an awfully close 7.48" (.19 m).
The DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM is for use on Sony's compact (APS-C) DSLRs only (including Sony NEX-series digicams) and fills the roll of a fast, compact "normal" lens when used on the aformentioned cameras. With 6 elements in 5 groups, a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM), and close focusing down to a hair over 9" (.23 m), the DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM makes for a handy travel lens, especially for shooting in low-light conditions.
The third member of the trio is the Sony 85mm f/2.8 SAM, a compact short-telephoto / portrait lens, which works with both full-frame DSLRs as well as compact (APS-C) DSLRs, with which it has the equivalent field of view of a 127.5mm lens. The Sony 85mm f/2.8 SAM contains 5 elements in 4 groups, a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM), and focuses down to a bit under 2', making it ideal for tight portraits.
