Ever wonder how to put together your images and text to produce a professionally published book? This artist’s talk is about the evolution of an independent photography book by Jason Gardner called A Flower in the Mouth, showing the culture, music, and rituals of the authentic, folkloric Carnaval festival in Pernambuco, Brazil.
Gardner recently released A Flower in the Mouth with a solo exhibition and book launch at Lincoln Center. He discusses how the project progressed over nine years, from his first journey to his fifth, from initial image capture, conducting interviews, integrating video, developing concepts, written themes, maquette design, then to crowd-funding and final publication.
