The Kensington Proximo System Makes Your Valuables Unforgettable

“Every 3.5 seconds, a mobile phone is lost or stolen.” So states the website of Kensington, an industry leader when it comes to electronic-device security. They are responsible for the Kensington Lock Slot, as well as a wide range of security lock cables for a variety of electronics, from laptops and tablets to projectors and copy machines.” The alarming statistic they've cited has driven Kensington to create the Proximo app-enabled monitoring system, which is both simple to use and easy to set up.

I’ve written recently that technology can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it claims to make our lives easier. However, the more feature-packed a gadget is, and the more money we spend on that gadget, the more it can complicate life. Opening bills and thick instruction manuals can both be anxiety-inducing experiences, which is why I’m drawn to devices that strike a balance between utility, ease of operation and affordability. Too many features will raise the cost as well as the prospective complications. So when I got my hands on the Proximo monitoring system, I was immediately struck by the simplicity and convenience of it.

The Proximo Starter Kit includes a Bluetooth 4.0 FOB keychain, a Bluetooth 4.0 TAG and a  free, downloadable Proximo app for your iPhone 4S or iPhone 5. When these three things are used together, you should—in theory—always know where your iPhone, keys and other valuables are at all times. If you usually keep your iPhone at close range with the Bluetooth 4.0 FOB keychain, and you leave a restaurant or a friend’s house with your keys, but without your iPhone, then a customizable alarm sound on your keychain will alert you as soon as you move a preset distance away from your iPhone. The Proximity system also supports a one-touch Find Alert to help you find your iPhone if you suddenly notice it's not right in front of you.

Although the Starter Kit includes a TAG for keeping track of one other valuable, you can keep track of up to five additional possessions by using the Proximo app dashboard with additional TAGS that can be purchased separately. You can put a TAG in your purse or slip one in your laptop or camera bag. Really, you can attach a TAG to almost anything that you value and worry about losing or getting stolen—even your car. Plus, once an item has been tagged, you can set up a customizable proximity meter for each TAG, so you’ll always know how far away you are from each possession.

However, if you do leave something behind and fail to be reminded by the alarm, you will still be able to track it using the Proximo app’s "Last Seen" function, a feature that uses pinpoints on a map to aid in the recovery of your lost item. The TAG and FOB keychain built-in batteries will last up to six months as well, so you'll have plenty of time to track your valuables. With this two-level alarm system, it should become very difficult for you to lose your stuff. And with a purely utilitarian design, free from flashy features, bells and whistles, the Proximo system will only make your life easier.
