NAB 2019: Sound Devices Scorpio, The New Flagship Mixer-Recorder

0Share

The latest offering from Sound Devices, Scorpio, is the next-generation flagship portable mixer-recorder designed for state-of-the-art production sound. With 16 mic/line preamplifiers, 32 channels of Dante in and out, AES in and out, 12 analog outputs and multiple headphone outputs, Scorpio is well suited for any production scenario. The internal matrix menus allow you to create customizable routing of any input to any channel, bus, or output. Up to 12 buses may be individually mixed and, with its compact form factor, the Scorpio is equally at home over-the-shoulder or in a mobile rig.

At the heart of Scorpio lies an ultra-powerful, cutting-edge engine that comprises three FPGA circuits and six ARM processors, which provide ample horsepower for the most complex of tasks. FPGA-based audio processing with 64-bit data paths helps to ensure high sound quality and reliability. Another notable facet is the redesign of the microphone preamp circuits, which now offer an even smoother sound with the lowest noise of any preamp in Sound Devices 20-year history. The preamps also include analog limiters, high-pass filters, delay, 3-band EQ and phantom power.

With great attention to detail, the Scorpio's interface and menu system provide access with only one or two button presses, and many functions and features can be accessed with only one hand. The Scorpio has an internal SSD for recording and adds the ability to record to two SD cards simultaneously, for redundancy. An SD-Remote Android application allows for control of the Scorpio over a large display.

Scorpio features a built-in dual L-Mount battery charger, and may be powered with L-Mount batteries. It can also be powered over the built-in TA4 DC inputs using smart batteries, NP-1 batteries, or in-line power supplies. Additionally, the super-accurate, fully featured timecode generator contains its own battery to hold timecode for up to four hours after power off. There are several accessories available for the Scorpio, including TA5F to XLRF cables, an SL-Riser, an NP-type battery cup, a smart battery cup, a rechargeable lithium ion battery, and a dual-bay smart charger/calibrator.
