The "Basic Model" Reimagined

With the a7 III, Sony has taken the idea of a base model and transformed it with the incredibly rich feature set the manufacturer has managed to pack into this well-rounded camera. The main enhancement comes thanks to the use of a 24.2MP full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor, providing faster readout speeds, vastly improved low-light performance with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 204800, and the ability to record UHD 4K video with Hybrid-Log Gamma or S-Log2/3 gammas.

Speedier Performance All Around

To make the most of the a7 III's new functions, Sony has equipped it with the BIONZ X processor and a front-end LSI, delivering much faster performance in nearly every aspect. Photographers will see this improvement most notably in the revamped Fast Hybrid AF System, which sports 693 phase-detect points, 425 contrast-detect points, and additional boosts for Eye AF and continuous focusing. Along with the improved focus speeds, the camera also has faster shooting rates of up to 10 fps with either the electronic or mechanical shutter.

Updated Body Design and Ergonomics

Though image quality improvements are appreciated, the a7 III really steps things up with its redesigned body. A significant bump comes with the use of the NP-FZ100 battery pack, which is rated for up to 710 shots on a single charge. The body also features dual SD card slots, including one rated to UHS-II, and a USB Type-C port for lightning-fast transfers. That isn't all—the rear of the camera offers a joystick, touchscreen, and OLED EVF for enhanced operability. The camera also boasts improved weather sealing.
