The AJA Ki Pro Quad 4K Recorder


AJA’s Ki Pro “family” is a lineup of file-based, video recording and playback devices. With a form factor and controls reminiscent of a traditional tape deck, the original Ki Pro was popular with broadcast and post-production professionals because it enabled SD and HD video recording in the edit-friendly ProRes 422 format. Next, the Ki Pro Mini offered those capabilities in a more compact unit that could be mounted easily on a mobile camera-support system. Now, the Ki Pro Quad takes a major leap forward by providing 4K recording and playback, real-time raw debayering, Thunderbolt connectivity, and more. Let’s dive right into specifics.

AJA designed the Ki Pro Quad as the hub of a comprehensive and efficient 4K production workflow. The recorder supports Apple ProRes in all its flavors (444, 422, 422 HQ, 422 LT, and 422 Proxy) and at resolutions of up to 4096 x 2160. Footage is recorded to AJA Pak Media, a proprietary SSD available in capacities of 256 or 512GB. The Ki Pro Quad features two media slots, which support an automatic rollover feature that relays a continuous clip to the second drive when the first drive reaches capacity. AJA Pak Media is also compatible with the AJA Pak Dock, which allows users to transfer recorded footage via Thunderbolt or USB 3.0.

Most of the vital connections are located on the back of the unit. They include four 3G/HD-SDI inputs, four 3G/HD-SDI outputs, an SDI monitor output, HDMI monitor output, LTC input (for timecode via BNC), Reference input (for genlock), Thunderbolt output, RJ45 LAN port, and two left/right balanced XLR audio inputs with phantom power. The eight 3G/HD-SDI inputs and outputs can be assigned a variety of configurations, including 4K or Quad HD 4:2:2 or 4:4:4. The Ki Pro Quad also supports Canon Raw when used with the Canon C500. Raw data can be passed through via Thunderbolt while simultaneously debayering and recording 4K ProRes files. A range of input and/or output conversions can also be applied to the video signal, scaling it for 4K, Quad HD, 2K, or HD recording and monitoring.

A built-in LCD screen allows users to monitor the image and provides a convenient display for the configuration menus. In addition to this display, 14 operational buttons, a 2-channel audio level meter, left and right audio input level adjustment knobs, headphone volume adjustment knob, headphone jack and the power ON/OFF button are located on the face of the unit. Those who are familiar with the Ki Pro Mini will find this to be a similar user interface. Though slightly thicker, the Ki Pro Quad also has the same profile as the Ki Pro Mini, so the new device will be compatible with the same mounting accessories.

Hello, I need to know if I can record 4 different signal in the ki pro quad, I can record 4 different signal cameras in the ki pro, I can put each signal in the each input HDSDI?


No, unfortunately the AJA Ki Pro Quad can only record a single source at once. The multiple SDI inputs are used for 2K and 4K recording with cameras that require multiple SDI connections to output 4K, such as the Canon C500.


I would have a question for you; Is the AJA Ki Pro Quad compatible with the Panasonic AG AF-100 for 4k recording ?



Unfortunately, the Panasonic AF100 does not deliver 4K video on the output.
