When it comes to ENG video capture, form factor and performance are paramount, and with a total weight of 8.2 lb (including the lens, 4.3" LCD screen, microphone and battery) and phenomenal image quality, the JVC GY-HM750U ProHD solid state compact shoulder camcorder makes for an attractive video recording package.
The JVC GY-HM750U ProHD camcorder is a third-generation upgrade of a successful line of JVC portable camcorders. The new camera records to Class 6 and Class 10 SDHC memory cards and features dual hot-swappable recording simultaneously or individually for up to six hours of continuous HD video recording when using both of the camera's available card slots.
A 68-pin chassis connector allows for cable-free connectivity to a number of expansion modules, including the KA-AS790 DVB-ASI adapter and SxS Memory Card recorder (KA-MR100G), and like other HM-series camcorders, the JVC GY-HM750U records full HD video in all major signal formats including 1920 x 1080, 1440 x 1080, 1280 x 720, and 720 x 480. The new camera can also over-crank and under-crank in the 720p 35Mbps mode, making it possible to record slow or fast motion at 24p or 30p.
Included with the GY-HM750U is an interchangeable Canon KT14x4.4KRSJ HD 4.4 to 62mm (14x) zoom lens, which features internal focusing, improved lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration characteristics, manual focus, servo or manual control of zoom and aperture settings and even edge-to-edge illumination throughout the lens's zoom range.
In addition to the 14x Canon zoom, the new camcorder also accepts other optics including the 13x Th13x3.5BRMU wide-angle Fujinon zoom, the new 17x XT17sx45BRMK1 Fujinon, 18x HTs18x4.2BRM Fujinon zoom, 20x KT20X5BKRS Canon zoom, along with adapters for using 1/2" and 2/3" bayonet mount zoom lenses. Users also have the option of adding the HZ-CA13U film lens adapter to the 1/3" bayonet mount, making it possible to use 16mm film camera lenses on the GY-HM750U camcorder.
The GY-HM750U camcorder makes use of JVC's Native File Recording technology, which stores captured video in ready-to-edit file formats favored by Apple's Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier and similar non-linear editing programs. Image files are created as .MOV files, which can be dragged easily into Final Cut Pro and Premier time lines and clip bins without having to convert or wrap them or use intermediate codecs, which saves time, effort and maintains files as first-generation material.
For those using NLE systems from Avid, Canopus and Vegas, the GY-HM750U camcorder supports MP4 file formats, which can be edited without having to encode them, and for standard-def applications, the GY-HM750U creates Type-2 AVI files, which can be readily imported into most legacy NLE systems.
To better enable easy viewing while shooting, the GY-HM750U features a .45", 1.22-million dot Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) panel (852 x 480 x 3), which features a native 16:9 aspect ratio, a battery "fuel gauge," and delivers about five times the detail of most camcorder viewfinders. There's also a serial digital interface that eliminates any loss of image quality when incorporating graphic overlays.
To complement the camera's viewfinder, the GY-HM750U also features a 4.3" (800 x 480 WVGA) flip-out LCD panel, which along with an anti-glare surface, also features a native 16:9 aspect ratio and can be used for recording, playback, clip management and menu operations using intuitive cross-key controls.
Other features found on the JVC GY-HM750U include a Spot Exposure Meter, uncompressed audio recording with full manual control, a patented Focus Assist function, and a 6-pin remote connector for use with JVC RM-LP25U or RM-LP55U remote control units (optional).
