For years, the Consumer Electronics Show has been home to some of the most cutting edge and innovative technologies on the planet. CES 2019 is no different, with a host of new technologies garnering attention. One of the technologies generating the most buzz is the apparent next evolution in virtual/augmented reality technology: XR.
Sounds Cool, But What is It?
While the exact meaning behind XR is up to some debate, many have settled on the phrase "extended reality," which is still rather vague. The best way to think about XR is as a container or umbrella for a device that uses a combination of other "reality" tech—i.e., virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR)—to create content.
How About an Example?
One of the best examples of XR tech was at this year's CES, the aptly named Vuze XR Camera. The XR, whose longform title is the XR 3D VR 180° / 2D 360° 5.7K Camera—a testament to its multifaceted approach to content creation—gives users the option of capturing both 180- and 360-degree images in various resolutions and formats (5.7K, 3D video, etc.). Right now, that's the purpose and biggest benefit of the "XR" tag, to let users know a device can shoot content for different types of "reality" platforms.
What's Next?
The Vuze XR and similar devices are just now coming to market, but expect the trend to continue in 2019 and beyond. As the technology customers use to experience VR and AR becomes more sophisticated and immersive, creators will need devices that can support those platforms. XR seems like the answer to that need.
