Though once considered an extremely niche lens category, probe lenses have recently exploded in popularity thanks to filmmakers and videographers discovering countless innovative shots, angles, and perspectives that are only achievable with these long tube-like lenses. DZOFilm is now entering the space with an innovative addition to the formula—zoom! The DZOFilm X-Tract 18-28mm T8 full frame probe zoom lens combines the flexibility of a zoom with the precision of a professional probe lens.
The X-Tract is waterproof, dustproof, and has an anti-fog design, with DZOFilm promising extremely controlled focus breathing and parfocal abilities. The T8 aperture is standard relatively fast for a probe lens, and the 18-28mm focal length provides an impressive 73 to 100° field of view. The lens also has multi-layer anti-reflective coating and low-dispersion lens elements to cut down on flaring and chromatic aberration. The X-Tract weighs about 2.4 lb, and much of that weigh is in the rear of the lens to cut down on vibrations. The front outside diameter is less than 1.2” to help it fit in narrow spaces.
Some of the most exciting specs here are the fantastic 2.1:1 maximum magnification ratio and a spectacular 0.24” minimum focus distance. DZOFilm promises that distortion is also heavily controlled, with ±2% across the zoom range and virtually zero distortion when the lens is at 24mm. Other stats are what you’d expect from a high-quality cine lens: 300° focus throw, M0.8 gear pitches, and an included custom hard case with foam inlays.
90 and 360° periscope lens versions will be available separately, but the 0° direct-view version available at launch should be more than enough to get you creative macro shots and one-of-a-kind wide-angle footage even in heavily constricted spaces. The 18-28mm zoom range can help you get more shots in a shorter period or even try some Hitchcock-style dolly zooms. The X-Tract is only available in PL mount, but DZOFilm offers a wide variety of mount adapters that can help the lens fit on your camera of choice.
