NAB 2019: Tokina Cinema Unveils Vista One T1.5 Primes and 50-135mm T2.9 MKII

Cinematographers famously pick lenses because of their character. Tokina Cinema wants to give shooters yet another unique lensing choice with the Vista One T1.5 primes the company is showing off at NAB 2019. There is also a 50-135mm T2.9 MKII lens on the way that upgrades the mechanical design and performance of the highly regarded optic.

The Vista One T1.5 Prime Lenses are much like the Vista Prime series. In fact, they are the same lenses—with one key difference. These limited-release lenses only feature a single coating. They are also equipped with a different external design but, in terms of optics, the key is the coating. A common trend in high-end glass, these lenses are less contrasty and have less resistance to flare, creating unique properties that are impossible to reproduce in post. However, because these still have a single coating, there is some level of control over the image maintained, allowing cinematographers to craft the look as they see fit. At launch, it comes as a complete set of six lenses, including an 18mm T1.5, 25mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5, 85mm T1.5, and 105mm T1.5.

On a very different note is an updated 50-135mm T2.9 MKII Lens. This lens features the same optical design and performance as its predecessor, but it promises a more durable mechanical design. It also looks a lot cleaner. Practically speaking, this won’t be easy to see but for heavy use and professional applications where reliability is a concern, this is an important change.
