Unveiled: Blackmagic Studio Camera

66Share

Blackmagic seeks entry into the broadcast-camera market with its newly announced Studio Camera, available in Full HD and 4K (Ultra HD) models. Designed for live broadcast applications, the Blackmagic Studio Camera sports a unique design with a massive 10" LCD screen, built-in 4 hour battery, and a set of features you’d expect to see in large studio cameras, such as built-in talkback and tally indicators.

Intended to meet the needs of a variety of live broadcast applications, the Blackmagic Studio Camera provides the connections required to fit into those environments. Connections include SDI (3G on the HD version and 12G on the 4K version) and optical fiber video inputs/outputs, XLR audio connections, reference, LANC remote control, and a 4-pin XLR power input.

The camera features an active Micro Four Thirds lens mount that is compatible with a wide range of lenses via third-party adapters, opening the door for the use of common DSLR lenses to PL-mount cinema lenses, and even B4 ENG lenses. Camera settings are controlled via buttons conveniently placed right below the LCD screen, or directly from ATEM production switchers via downloaded updates. Multiple mounting points along the top and side of the camera let you attach any accessories that you may need.

Can I use Canon 1/2 inch eng lens? I saw that a year ago there was no solution... Is there any ways to o it now?

Unfortunately no such adapters have been offered to use a 1/2" lens on the camera.  I am sorry about that.

In order to avoid vignetting you need to use lenses that has a 2x extender due to the size of the cameras sensor.

You can use the camera for sporting events but would need a compatible lens, zoom and focus controls and separate power for the lens itself.

Wondering if the LANC can control zoom, iris, and focus?

Unfortunately, the LANC can control start and stop only.

Hi,

Looking forward to seeing a demo of the 2k or 4K studio camera.  Which camera controlled Zoom lense, or lenses, do you recommend to use with the camera. By camera controlled I mean a lense system that can be controlled by a hand mount on the back of the camera to change focus and zoom settings.

Thanks,

Tom Campbell

The built in mount is Micro 4/3. Micro 4/3 lenses will work best as they will have the electrical connection to the camera. All other lenses will need an adapter which will make them mostly manual.

At present there is no zoom setting in the camera for lenses.

Dana,

"At present there is no zoom setting in the camera for lenses."

Thanks for your reply.  Does this mean that there is no way currently to control a zoom lense mechanically on the blackmagic

cameras? i.e. the only choice is to reach around and use your fingers to change the zoom setting? Is there a way to add a handle,

for instance, to the tripod that would control the zoom (and aperture) settings?

Thanks!

Correct, right now there is no electonic way that we have seen to control the lenses so it would be manually controlled. I imagine this may change in the future with different adapters but nothing as of yet.

Would definitely like updates and info on this camera !!!

Please send me updates on this camera.

The HUGE thing that the designers of this camera did not think about was with the viewfinder/LCD. Having an LCD that does not swivel, it means that camera operator will have to be standing at the same eye level with the LCD or get an external monitor.

As a long time studio camera operator, I hardly see a studio camera rigged at my eye level. In most cases the viewfinder is above eye level so having an LCD that can tilt down makes a lot of sense.

I see that this camera has a LANC connection. Is there a zoom lens compatible with this camera that is controlled through LANC?

The LANC connection on the camera will control start/stop only. No lens control unfortunately.

Are there any updates on this issue?

Any lenses that can be controlled with LANC, maybe Panasonic Power Zoom lenses?

There is no compatibility yet for zoom and focus control through LANC. Just start and stop.

Please send me more information and pricing on this camera.

Which Fujinon EFP lenses are compaitble with this camera?

Hi Greg,

The Studio Camera has a Micro 4/3 lens mount. All other lenses you need to use will be attached using an adapter such as this:

The B4 2/3" To Micro 4/3 Adapter from MTF lets you mount a lens with a B4 2/3" mount to a micro 4/3 camera body.

We are planning on purchasing 6 new HD cameras in the next month. We have been looking at the traditional manufacturers--Sony and Panasonic--but I am wondering if this camera can compete with them in the price arena since we are a college with a limited budget. What sort of price range will this camera be in?

Quisiera tener mas informacion y saber Cual es el precio?

Saludos

Would like to know how to use this with ENG lenses.

Hi Neilie,

The Studio Camera has a native Micro 4/3" lens mount. To use Nikon lenses you will need to use an adapter such as this:

The MTF Services Ltd Nikon G to Micro 4/3 Adapter allows you to attach any Nikon-mounted lens to MFT mount cameras. It is compatible with DX and 35mm format lenses and also supports lenses with or without aperture rings.
