In the following video, Rob Rives, from B&H, discusses the Zoom F8 Professional Multi-Track Field Recorder for Filmmaking and Sound Design.  Using both an Audio-Technica AT899 Condenser Lavalier Microphone, as well as a Schoeps CMC6 MK41 microphone mounted on an Auray Boompole with a Schoeps shockmount, Rives makes a direct comparison of sound quality at 24-bit/192 kHz resolution between the Zoom F8 Field Recorder and the more expensive Sound Devices 688 Professional Field Recorder.    The video explores the F8’s features including timecode support, three power options, dual SD card slots, redundant recording, its use as a multi-channel audio interface for Mac and PC, and compatibility with the company’s microphone capsules. In the following video, Rob Rives, from B&H, discusses the Audio-Technica AT8024 camera-mount microphone. With the microphone mounted on a Canon 5D mk III, the video explores the microphone’s two settings: one for a mono cardioid pickup pattern and one for an internally matrixed mid-side stereo pattern.  The video compares the sound quality of the microphone to the camera’s built-in microphone, demonstrates the integrated shock mount that attaches to the camera’s shoe mount, as well as noting the 100-hour battery life from a single AA battery. The microphone includes a-10 dB and a-20 dB pad for recording sounds up to 148 dB, and an optional 80 Hz high-pass filter to help reduce hum and wind noise. Adrian Toto has an important piece of advice for wedding videographers: think about audio! Quality audio bridges the gap between fine art and storytelling and is imperative for a successful wedding video. Toto outlines the basic audio gear and mic setups needed to record a wedding, whether you are shooting solo or with assistants, and he mentions a few pitfalls that you can expect along the way, and how best to avoid them. His pointers are apt for a video team or anyone shooting solo, but his most practical tip—hire an assistant who is as comfortable with sound as with image.
