With the growing popularity of using iPads and iPhones to record video, more and more people are running into the same problem- how to get good sound. While the camera is great and the built-in mic is probably fine for phone calls and FaceTime, videographers demand more professional options. In this video, Rob from B&H takes us through some third-party audio solutions to consider, from entry-level consumer up to ENG-grade professional gear. The video explores both wireless systems like the Azden WMS-PRO+I and Sennheiser EW 100 G3 as well as hard-wire options including the Polsen MO-PL1 and Rode VideoMic GO. Since the mic input on the iPad and iPhone wasn't designed for pro audio gear, the video also explores some adapters and mounts to consider when rigging up your mic, and delves into the issues of audio monitoring. Do you monitor through the iPad/iPhone and live with delay or monitor through your audio equipment—assuming it has a headphone out—and risk not knowing what levels are being recorded?

In this video, Rob Rives shows us around the MOTU 828x, a professional digital audio interface that features a total of 28 inputs and 30 outputs. The unit, which is equipped with bothThunderbolt and USB connections, can be used with 32- or 64-bit Mac or PC systems. In broadcasting, it seems there is always a debate as to what kind of microphone is best to use—dynamic or condenser. Both have a list of pros and cons for any given broadcast application, and with the newly announced BP40 Large Diaphragm Dynamic Broadcast Microphone, it appears Audio-Technica is looking to combine the best of both worlds into a dynamic package. The mic sports a large (for a dynamic mic) 37.5mm diaphragm that provides some condenser-like articulation without betraying the low-end oomph of a dynamic. If you do need to tame that low end because of a rumbling room or extra-boomy voice, the mic does have a selectable high-pass filter. Also featured in the video is a look at the new AT2020USBi, a refresh to their popular USB mic that sees no changes to the capsule or sound capture quality, but an increase of its maximum sampling rate to 24-bit/96 kHz and the inclusion of both USB and Lightning connectors for hooking directly up to your iOS devices. One of RME’s flagship products, the Babyface received an overhaul at this year’s NAB, and it’s clear that RME’s design team took quite a bit of feedback from users into consideration when updating the portable interface. The Babyface Pro, most notably, sees the breakout cable, that bane of portable interface users, eliminated altogether, with the XLR I/O being integrated right into the unit.
