Master Every Shot with the DJI OM 5 Smartphone Gimbal
09/08/2021DJI is expanding its family of motorized smartphone video stabilizers with the newly announced OM 5 Smartphone Gimbal. The OM 5 succeeds last year’s OM 4 as the new DJI flagship stabilizer, bringing with it across-the-board improvements to its hardware and software, as well as adding some brand-new features.
New to the OM 5 is a built-in 215mm extension rod that allows users to capture footage from farther away and effectively doubles as a selfie stick. Even better: The OM 5 manages to incorporate this extension rod without compromising the same size, weight, and foldability that made the OM 4 so popular. In fact, the folded and unfolded footprint of the OM 5 is smaller than the folded and unfolded footprint of its predecessor. The new design also incorporates metal joints to enhance durability, so you can add “more rugged” to its list of improvements.
On the software side of things, DJI used the OM 5 to introduce its new ShotGuides feature. Primarily designed for new users, ShotGuides automatically recognizes your surrounding environment and recommends helpful shooting tips and creative templates.
Existing software features, such as ActiveTrack 4.0, were also improved. Highly regarded for its ability to track human subjects accurately, the newly updated ActiveTrack 4.0 not only improves the OM 5’s recognition capabilities, but it also now allows users to track pets accurately, as well.
Along with the new and improved features, many of the fan-favorite shooting modes remain, including DynamicZoom, SpinShot, Timelaps, CloneMe Pano, and more.
You'll be able to order the OM 5 in traditional Athens Gray or a new Sunset White.

Thank you for your product innovation. For those of us in the tech field ( construction, etc) we are now using phones to scan our information but also with the aid of a Realsense or Lidar attachment camera bar.
Would you consider a modification or alternate product that will allow you to attach such a device to your innovative gimbal?
Thanking you in advance.
Hi Charles -
Please be aware that B&H is not a manufacturer. You may wish to present your ideas directly to DJI for review.
I'd buy one of these except it doesn't meet my needs; it has to be able to work with an external microphone plugged into the charging port. The industry needs to redo the designs to accommodate this.
When will companies realize many of us use cases to protect our $1k phones? I have a 4 that I dont use because the the "clamp" wont hold onto the phone case, so I have to remove the case which is VERY inconvenient.
I really like the previous version. However, having to take it out of the case was indeed the pia. I, like you, want to protect my $1500 phone with the Otterbox case.
I agree. I have an OM4 that I hardly ever use because it's a pain to take my phone out of the otterbox case just to use it. I ended up buying a sony zv-1 along with the vlogger kit to use as a vlogging camera so I don't have to worry about taking my phone out of the case anymore. The OM4 would have been a perfect solution for me if they had just made accommodations for a decent size case.
I spared myself problems because I was in b & h and checked if the smartphone with the cover could connect to the device. And since it failed then I did not buy the product.
I agree with you Corey, what idiots at DJI to have not figured out that 95% of people who would use this gimbal would have a high end cellphone with a case.
I'm late to the game here, but I also needed the new OM 5 to work with my Moment case on iPhone 13 Pro. I saw someone else suggested taking the pads off the phone clamp. I did this (wasn't too hard -- all three pads came off cleanly), and now my phone feels secure. The case provides adequate cushion for the clamp. Not ideal, but it does make it completely workable now with case on. That said, DJI needs to make improvements to this side of things!
Hi Michele -
Brava! Very creative Michele! Thank you for this suggestion.
how fast is the tracking for pets? would this be helpful to video dog agility?
Hi Diane -
The DJI Mobile 5 can automatically track body shapes to track human subjects without the need to make a manual selection with the latest ActiveTrack 4.0.
Can action cams be substituted for a smart phone. My Gopro shoots way better video than my phone.
Hi David -
Sure can David. Use this adapter mount:
PGYTECH Action Camera Adapter+ for Mobile Gimbals B&H # PGPOG020
The Action Camera Adapter+ from PGYTECH allows you to mount select action cameras onto smartphone gimbals such as the DJI Osmo Mobile 3, Osmo Mobile 2, Zhiyun-Tech Smooth-4, Moza Mini-S, and Feiyu VLOG Pocket. Supported cameras include the GoPro HERO7, HERO6/5 Black, HERO 3+/3, Osmo Action, YI 4K, and YI Action Camera. The adapter is made of aluminum and it attaches to your gimbal's smartphone clamp. It holds your camera via two included mounting screws.
