I was looking for a camera that would give me good image quality without the size and bulk of my DSLR. I was also hoping for good low-light performance. I have purchased several Point & Shoot cameras and been disappointed with all. I prefer to capture in RAW mode so I can adjust the development of the image. The G16 affords me just that.
I took the camera with a group viewing the inside of an old historic building this weekend, I found at a 1x zoom I had excellent low light performance and could get an ISO of 80 in Aperture priority. However increasing to 5x quickly brought me to 3200 ISO and a noisy photo.
That is very likely a harsh and unfair judgement as the lighting was really bad and bottom line to keep a tolerable shutter speed a higher ISO was required. My friend with a Full Frame had the same experience. I did under expose the photo a few times which brought about a slow shutter speed. This required bracing the camera against a solid object to get a picture. This worked well and I got several good photos in a rather dark room without flash (not allowed) this way.
I found the View Finder difficult to use, but using the screen on back I could see the photo and all the necessary information required to create a great shot, this provided a very ergonomic picture taking experience, I would say I prefer it over my DSLR. Yes it can be done the same with my DSLR but the camera is too heavy to make it comfortable.
The image quality is easily as good as my DSLR. The f1.8 to f2.8 lens makes it a very good low light camera and an excellent outdoor camera. I intend to use it as my general walk around camera. I believe street photography may be calling me.
Overall I believe I will be using this camera as much as my DSLR.

Bought this camera as a complement to my SLR based on feature set and noticed the following:

Pros:
Practically no shutter lag
AF works well on first image and in low light
Good control over AF zones
Large aperture - good in low light
Battery lasts reasonably long
Good image quality despite moderate resolution
Intuitive UI (via screen)

Cons:
Autofocus during continuous shooting is garbage - 80% of photos taken with Continuous AF are blurry (BIGGEST issue I've seen in stark contrast with what Canon may make you believe the camera can do - admittedly G16 does not use phase contrast focusing)
Ergonomics could be better - primary issue is dial on back: registers click instead of turn half of the times
Retracted lens protected by flimsy baffles, no lens cap
Environmental sealing could be better
Can be stopped down to f/8 only (to be fair this is not bad for a P&S camera)
Some awkward limitations on setting ISO and/or aperture in portrait and HDR modes

Great camera if you don't need Continuous AF (Canon needs to improve this) and you don't get frustrated with the dial in the back. In my experience not useful for shooting series of photos of moving subjects.

Replaced G15

By Kathleen

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I've used my G15 for years, and after shooting for months with a scratch across the glass and dirt inside (don't ask how - no clue), and after starting to get repeated lens retraction errors, I bit the dust and ordered the G15. I love the weight - heavier than other point and shoots, and feels sturdier in my hands. Picture quality is outstanding. The most fun part is that it came 24 hours before the Perseid meteor showers, and it has a STAR setting! Tried it out, captured a meteor effortlessly, and the focus is amazing! I love this camera!!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

This is a great camera for taking superb photos. Took me a little while to learn how to use it after downloading the 214 User Guide, but I learn a little more each day. Great quality for the price. Furthermore this is my second time purchasing a camera from B&H, and I won't go anywhere else. Great service!

Great camera!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

It was very easy purchasing my PowerShot G16 from B&H, and it arrived the very next day. The only drawback was the size of the medium size case that arrived as part of "Deluxe Kit". Once I put the strap on the camera it would no longer fit into the case. I ended up going to Best Buy to purchase a slightly larger case.

Good camera in many respects, but with flaws IMHO

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I just bought a refurbished copy from Canon and have been playing around with it. This is a great camera in many ways. Great size, heft, controls, fast sharp lens, useful focal length range etc. However, I'm considering returning it. The viewfinder (in this case optical and not through the lens) a feature I have to have, is pretty useless. It only reveals 70-80% of what the sensor 'sees'. This makes it useless for framing, though there are workarounds for this. Also problematic: the lens barrel shows up in the viewfinder at the wide angle end. The view though the viewfinder is also not the same as the sensor's view. All of this might be OK for landscapes etc. but this becomes a major problem if you enjoy macro shooting or close-ups and find it helpful, as I do, to use the viewfinder. With this camera you can't shoot macro/closeups that way as the image you capture will be entirely different from what you saw through the viewfinder. You must use the LCD screen for these kinds of photos. If this camera had an EVF, it would be an incredible tool, I think. Without it, I don't think it is.

Great camera

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

This is a great compact camera to support my photography on the go. I love my t3i DSLR but that is too much to haul around on a trip when I have my kids and all their stuff. This is a great sub in b/c the quality is excellent and it is still fast to catch them in action without being blurry. I have not tried all the features yet, but I have been using it in Manual with good results. I am also impressed with the zoom for how small this camera is. I considered getting the g7x for a minute before purchasing this but the g7x does not have the viewfinder which I really like and the grip on it did not feel as substantial. I am used to the DSLR so the g16 felt plenty small and compact and it has a little bump out to really have a nice feel in your hand. The g7x felt a little too tiny and the zoom wasn't as good so I feel like I made the right choice for me. I am happy I purchased.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I purchased a G16 because my G12 died after four years of faithful service. I chose the G16 after considering other point-and-shoot cameras because of the zoom range, it's size (several point-and-shoot cameras are too small for my hands) and my familiarity with Canon menus. I plan to my G16 as my carry around camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I have seen a few people who have this camera recently. It takes great pictures; especially for its size. It is very responsive. But in video, when recording loud sound, such as music from loudspeakers, it becomes scratchy or 'thumpy' - certainly not professional. Also, it has no mic input and cannot even have a mic on the hot shoe (according to what I have researched). So, if one is buying this mainly for picture, and will take a few clips of video (or even much - as long as the sound is not loud), it is great (and the picture quality is great in video as with pictures). However, if one wants video that can be considered professional; also more zoom, the store recommended Panasonic ZS60.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

This camera started out as a backup for my Canon 60D, but I have found that I use this camera more than the D60. I use it for everything except outdoor landscape photos where I need a longer zoom range. I think the quality of the photos is better than my DSLR. I also appreciate the compact size. The Canon G line is phenomenal. Canon has one for almost any need. Personally I think the G16 has the best of everything.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I own several Nikon DSLR camera, but I found that I needed a small camera for when my wife and I go or a walk or hike. After several weeks of research, I settled for the Canon Powershot G16, and am happy with that choice. It fills the gap I was looking for. It packs a lot of camera in a small body. I wanted a point and shot that allowed me to shoot in raw, the G16 allows that. The zoom range is more than adequate for my needs, and the fast f1.8 lens allows for fast autofocus in low light shooting with excellent results. The one down side is the small optical viewfinder, but I rarely use that, so it is a non-issue for me. It is the camera I was looking for, and I highly recommend it.

Years ago I had a Canon G7 and I loved it. I traded it and never forgot about it. I waited too long to get another Canon G. I love that you can use manual settings if you want to, but you can use auto settings, too, and still get great results. Pictures are crystal clear. This is a great camera for someone who had gotten used to using a DSLR but doesn't always want to carry around all the equipment. It would also be great for someone who would like to learn how to use manual settings and improve their photography skills but spend less money. I still love my DSLR but I find that I use this camera more often because it's so much more convenient.

Bought for my daughter to learn photography. The pictures it takes are fantastic! So easy to use, and so clear and detailed. It is small and easy to use, yet has a good zoom and does a pretty good wide angle. Battery life seems great so far. I was worried about spending $300 on something less than an SLR, but I would buy another one of these in an instant! I can't find anything to complain about it!
