The first thing that will strike you when you open the box is how large the lens is. 72mm lens cover size. Its not heavy, just large. If I want to go compact with my NEX 6, I will use my kit lens. For me the size of this lens is NOT an issue, but many NEX owners bought the camera for its compact nature and may find this a deal breaker.
Weight of the lens: I have installed the supplied Sony neck strap that came with the camera. It is relatively narrow, but considering the weight of the stock camera, it has worked well for me. I can attest that with this lens attached, I walked around for 3 hours with the stock Sony neck strap and the combined weight did not bother me at all.
Next issue would be price. Not necessarily the stand alone price of this lens, but for the buyer who is coming into the NEX market, they may find the combined costs for the body and lens steep. For $1,350.00 you have other options out there for a body and comparable focal range lens. You have to really have bought into the NEX look and feel to make this your first purchase. I personally have been completely smitten by the NEX 6 and would have no other camera and both of the above listed negatives don't matter to me but if I didn't have the love for this camera......
I have used the lens for two shoots so far. The first was a portrait shoot. The large lens size does give off a more professional appearance to the model. The F4 aperture seemed to work fine for the shoot. I used two flashes with a handheld speed of 1/160 and it forced me to use a 400 ISO for correct exposure. I prefer a 200 ISO as this seems to be the sweet spot for the NEX6 but the pictures still came out fine. Focusing was surprisingly fast. At a shooting distance of 8' the depth of field focal range is around 6" so you can get a nice sharp image across most of the head. You will not get a completely washed out background but its blurred out enough. This lens will be great for family portraits because you need the greater depth of field for multiple stacked groups of people. For single subject shoots, I would prefer a larger aperture for that nice blown out background look.
Next shoot was a handheld shoot on a beach. I found the zoom feature to be very quick. The entire zoom feature is enclosed which I really liked. If you shut the camera off for a bit, then turn it back on, the lens returns to 18mm. I understand the need to retract in other lens but this lens has no exposed moving portions. The zoom is quite fast so it wasn't a huge drawback. I kinda wish it reset in the middle of its zoom range which would give me the option to go in either direction much faster for a quick draw snapshot. It only has one zoom speed that I could tell but again, it was pretty fast.
I shot some high contrast scenes across the entire zoom range and was surprised that I saw VERY little purple fringing....like barely there at all, and probably the best lens I have owned for this type of shot. I can say I noticed a little softness to the lens...BUT...after checking out my camera settings, I saw that I had done this entire shoot in the portrait mode. I am not positive but I highly suspect the images will be much sharper if I had set the camera in landscape or any other setting than the soft portrait setting. Even so, the pictures turned out really nice even in portrait mode. Birds feathers showed enough detail to make me happy. I also photographed flying seagulls as they took off from a stand still. The lens was able to track and focus very well and I got probably 75% of those shots in focus (not always framed the best though :) ) I shot @ a 4000 shutter speed, 200 Iso, and of course f4. Barrel distortion is handled better than the kit lens @ 18mm. So far, I can not see a reason why I will use another lens on my camera unless I have a specialty use. If this lens were f2.8, I'm pretty sure it would never come off.

I want to like this lens more than I do but it has its compromises. The size is very manageable with the A6000, it's not heavy at all, but with it, you can't use the flash for fear of shadows. That's a big drawback. The pics have been very clear and sharp, but there is noticeable vignetting at the corners. It being a power zoom, there's no scale to tell you what focal length you're at, just a little zoom gauge in the viewfinder. No for me. I know I need to use it a bit more before I decide if I will keep it but one might be better served with a few prime lenses instaed of this, in a non-video capacity anyway. Build quality is very very high by the way, so at least you feel like you've gotten what you paid for. And B&H is always great to do business with, in my experience.

LOVE THIS LENS

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This is an incredible all-purpose lens. I needed an event solution to compliment my equipment and this lens really transformed my FS100 into that. Without it, I'd probably have purchased another camera.

Actual PXW-FS7 Use

By Michael

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I wanted to love this lens. Picked it up on a fellow DP's recommendation. Much lighter than Sony's proposed FS7 kit zoom 28-135 f4 G OSS lens but still has a power-zoom function.  However, its not really 4K sharp and has major pin-cushioning issues when used with the PXW-FS7 in real world shooting environments.  Maybe it plays well with the the 6300 and the A7 series (?). However, if you are attempting to use it with the FS7 and trying to cut cost corners here then you really aren't taking advantage of the FS7's sharpness and strengths.  I just wish Sony would offer a solid well built true 4k sharp f4 zoom lens that spanned 17-170mm with f4 speeds and no pin-cushioning. Even better, if they made it f2.8 I would empty my son's college fund to buy it....

Great choice for excellent pictures

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I have only taken a few pictures around the house. They seem clear and sharp. The zoom works well and is very quiet. It is larger than the 16-50mm that I received with the camera, but feels good with the A6000. I intend to make it my walk-around vacation camera. I am happy with the purchase for the cost.

Awesome everyday lens

By Dracnos

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This lens has an incredible range. Fast Focus on my a6300 though I'm a manual guy. Shooting on a crop sensor makes this lens 27-157mm which is perfect for any shooting need. Traveling, street, landscape, portrait, anything, this lens is an all around workhorse. Tough as nails too. 1 big and 1 small fall and still perfect.

Solid all around lens

By Dan

from London

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I bought this to go with my A6000 and so far I'm very impressed. I have a 24-105 canon and wanted the same length but smaller and easier to travel with. The weight is great and the image quality is lovely but the build of it feels a little cheap and the electronic focus and zoom isn't really my cup of tea.

Ideal for anyone wanting a step up from the kit lens but not wanting to spend out on a Zeiss.
On a whole it's a great lens and I think it'll stay with me a little longer then expected.

My best images are taken with the camera I actually have with me. This one won't fit in you pocket but it is light enough to take on hikes and trips. The power zoom is nice for video. It's very sharp for a zoom with this range and price

Don't hesitate to buy this lens.

By Scott Diller

from Jerusalem, Ohio

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I held off on buying this lens because of a few reviews. I wish I had started with this one. It's not huge, the focus and zoom rings work flawlessly. Everything is in a very user friendly place that makes using manual focus and focus peaking a great experience. Images are sharp and colors are good. If anyone asks me this is a must have for the a6000 / 6300 body.

THIS should have been the kit lens

By Daniel

from St Louis, Misssouri

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

If you're just starting out, don't get the kit lenses if you're gonna buy this. It's the best all around lens you'll ever buy for something like an a6300.

And with Clear Image Zoom, effectively you're buying an 18-210 f4, which is insane for $600

Not good on the FS5

By AlanB

from Venice CA

Verified Reviewer

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Hamid and Old Pro are right. Manual focus control is terrible, when trying to make minute adjustments the lens is liable to jump way out of focus when on the long end of the lens. Even worse, if you zoom in, focus and zoom out quickly the focus may jump out of focus, sometimes way out of focus. If you start to zoom back in it will grab focus. Quick zooms out cause unpredictable loss of focus, zooms in do not have the same problem. Try it yourself, using f4 zoom in tight on a focus chart. Then do a series of short zooms out. Use the focus magnifier to see the loss of focus. The error is not repeatable, different every time.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I am loving this lens . It is a very well made lens. Im using it with my Sony A6300 and its a perfect combo. The pictures are tack sharp. I have the 50mm 1.8 and the kit lens 16-55, but I think this will be on my camera 90% of the time. Focusing is smooth and quiet. Some have said its too heavy, but I don't find that to be the case. Just a great all around lens , and at f4 you still can get a little bokeh.

Decent Lens for the Money

By Bill

from Port St. Lucie, FL

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I own a 5D Mark II as my primary camera and a a6300 as a secondary camera. As a Canon user, I've become accustomed to the quality of their L-series lenses. This Sony lens is pretty good, but it doesn't compare to a Canon lens costing twice as much, obviously. I have found it to be a good lens to use while on vacation, as it covers wide to telephoto really well. The bokeh it produces is pleasant to the eye too. It has definite positives, so it's a good purchase, as long as you understand the image quality isn't going to compare favorably against much more expensive lenses.
