The first thing that will strike you when you open the box is how large the lens is. 72mm lens cover size. Its not heavy, just large. If I want to go compact with my NEX 6, I will use my kit lens. For me the size of this lens is NOT an issue, but many NEX owners bought the camera for its compact nature and may find this a deal breaker.
Weight of the lens: I have installed the supplied Sony neck strap that came with the camera. It is relatively narrow, but considering the weight of the stock camera, it has worked well for me. I can attest that with this lens attached, I walked around for 3 hours with the stock Sony neck strap and the combined weight did not bother me at all.
Next issue would be price. Not necessarily the stand alone price of this lens, but for the buyer who is coming into the NEX market, they may find the combined costs for the body and lens steep. For $1,350.00 you have other options out there for a body and comparable focal range lens. You have to really have bought into the NEX look and feel to make this your first purchase. I personally have been completely smitten by the NEX 6 and would have no other camera and both of the above listed negatives don't matter to me but if I didn't have the love for this camera......
I have used the lens for two shoots so far. The first was a portrait shoot. The large lens size does give off a more professional appearance to the model. The F4 aperture seemed to work fine for the shoot. I used two flashes with a handheld speed of 1/160 and it forced me to use a 400 ISO for correct exposure. I prefer a 200 ISO as this seems to be the sweet spot for the NEX6 but the pictures still came out fine. Focusing was surprisingly fast. At a shooting distance of 8' the depth of field focal range is around 6" so you can get a nice sharp image across most of the head. You will not get a completely washed out background but its blurred out enough. This lens will be great for family portraits because you need the greater depth of field for multiple stacked groups of people. For single subject shoots, I would prefer a larger aperture for that nice blown out background look.
Next shoot was a handheld shoot on a beach. I found the zoom feature to be very quick. The entire zoom feature is enclosed which I really liked. If you shut the camera off for a bit, then turn it back on, the lens returns to 18mm. I understand the need to retract in other lens but this lens has no exposed moving portions. The zoom is quite fast so it wasn't a huge drawback. I kinda wish it reset in the middle of its zoom range which would give me the option to go in either direction much faster for a quick draw snapshot. It only has one zoom speed that I could tell but again, it was pretty fast.
I shot some high contrast scenes across the entire zoom range and was surprised that I saw VERY little purple fringing....like barely there at all, and probably the best lens I have owned for this type of shot. I can say I noticed a little softness to the lens...BUT...after checking out my camera settings, I saw that I had done this entire shoot in the portrait mode. I am not positive but I highly suspect the images will be much sharper if I had set the camera in landscape or any other setting than the soft portrait setting. Even so, the pictures turned out really nice even in portrait mode. Birds feathers showed enough detail to make me happy. I also photographed flying seagulls as they took off from a stand still. The lens was able to track and focus very well and I got probably 75% of those shots in focus (not always framed the best though :) ) I shot @ a 4000 shutter speed, 200 Iso, and of course f4. Barrel distortion is handled better than the kit lens @ 18mm. So far, I can not see a reason why I will use another lens on my camera unless I have a specialty use. If this lens were f2.8, I'm pretty sure it would never come off.

I want to like this lens more than I do but it has its compromises. The size is very manageable with the A6000, it's not heavy at all, but with it, you can't use the flash for fear of shadows. That's a big drawback. The pics have been very clear and sharp, but there is noticeable vignetting at the corners. It being a power zoom, there's no scale to tell you what focal length you're at, just a little zoom gauge in the viewfinder. No for me. I know I need to use it a bit more before I decide if I will keep it but one might be better served with a few prime lenses instaed of this, in a non-video capacity anyway. Build quality is very very high by the way, so at least you feel like you've gotten what you paid for. And B&H is always great to do business with, in my experience.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

The b&h store in NYC, I was persuaded to buy this lens instead of the kit lens on the Sony a6000. For my niche, travel photos, this lens is amazing. It still has the potential for a low enough f stop to create cool focuses, but can get wide frame shots as well as dramatically zoomed in shots. Love it so much, the colors are beautiful

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This is now my go-to lens for trips abroad. I use this lens on a a7Rii (sort of a waste, right?). It takes very good, though not great photos, has an excellent range and feels very light on the camera... and it takes decent video. It is a lens that I don't have to change during vacation and well priced for the benefits it provides. For domestic travel and at home, I still use the Zeiss Batis lenses, as they are incredible. Unfortunate that it is not full frame and is only F4, but you can't have everything.

Perfect lens for daily use and travel.
Bad in low light.
Doesn't give you the blur effect that is used in 50 mm F1.8

Great lens for auto focus. Not manual.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I'm a documentary filmmaker, and red all the great reviews of this lens, which I concur with all. Affordable, fairly compact, continuous aperture, sharp, sharp, sharp. Fast auto focus, works well with my FS7 and incredibly well with my a6500. Why 4 stars? You CANNOT manual focus this lens. It is impossible! I thought my copy was defective, then I turned on autofocus and voila! Sharp. Now if you do interviews like me you can't have your camera on autofocus, you know it will be a disaster. My work around? I have the lens in manual and push for autofocus. It works, most of the time. Unfortunately not a lens I can use for important stuff. Important stuff needs to work all the time. I keep mine for pictures and some video work on the a6500. Works great, but rely on canons for serious interviews. Don't let the four stars fool you!

By Jeff

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Because five stars would represent perfection, I won't go overboard with exaggeration. Having said that I have owned this lens for many months now and use it on Sony A6300 bodies, mainly for video. That's not to say it isn't a great lens for photography because it certainly is and I have used it for that as well. It is very sharp and just has a very professional look to it. On the video side I couldn't be happier. The zoom is internal so there is nothing to mess up balance and it is very quiet. Though I do use external microphones when I have used just the internal sound before I have never picked up zoom noise from this lens. It focuses fast and has a very smooth zoom. Sample videos can be seen on our video channel (search We McLaughlins) as this is what generally remains on our Camera 1 as the primary shot. Build quality feels excellent and I really cannot speak to durability as I have fortunately not dropped the lens! It is the cheapest G series lens you're going to find and while that doesn't necessarily mean anything the G line seems to be on par with the old Minolta G line from which it draws its heritage: great build, fast, sharp and definitely a piece of glass you buy and hold onto for the long run.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I got this lens ever since it was out and I use it on my A6000.
Its compact enough, sharp enough, fast enough and most important sturdy enough. I have traveled over 20000 km with it and 0ver 6000 km on my motorcycle through real rough weather, from sea level to 18,000 feet. No complaints of any kind.

excellent all round lens

By Daniel

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Excellent all round lens. It increases your photographic possibilities of capturing landscapes, details, and even portraits. Its size makes them suitable for the Sony's A6000 series. You can also manually adjust the focus. The zoom speed may seem a bit slow for some (maybe it could have speed adjustments), but it suits most scenes, even with moving subjects, and practically soundless.
The optical quality seems good enough to project on screens of 2x3 meters, and for printed enlargements of 1m2 (all without post processing of any kind). Optical and chromatic aberrations are no greater than any semiprofessional lens or even some lenses 3 times their price.

My go-to lens

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Got this lens with my FS5. Bought other lenses afterwards but I always find myself coming back to this one out of sheer convenience. I shoot things like weddings, events, and interviews where there isn't really time to fiddle around with manual focus/multiple lenses and this is lens is on my camera 90% of the time (I change for low light or wider shots). Zoom is internal/electronic so no problems with rebalancing gimbal, and can be controlled remotely. Images are tack sharp in 4k. I've heard that f5.6-f8.0 is the sweet spot for this lens but its really sharp all around. Oh and the other thing I love about this lens is the electronic zoom. When you use the ring to zoom, velocity of the zoom is ramped from start to stop. Personally I think this looks very smooth and pleasing as opposed to the hard start/stops you get with mechanical zooms.

the only complaint I have about this lens is that the focus is slow and unreliable, but at least it works most of the time. It might also be the FS5's fault.

Similar performance to Sony 28-135mm servo zoom

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I bought for my second camera to have a similar range as my 28-135mm power zoom for 2 camera video shoots but did not expect the performance to be anywhere close to the 28-135mm, but in some ways it's even better. The zoom ring is more responsive for snap zooms and I love how lightweight it is. I don't use auto focus but I tested it and it is very fast on my a6000. Highly recommended if you need a servo zoom for APS-C.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I was finally able to give this lens a good, hard test run on a 4 day trip in Cuba. My initial impression was that the AF was fast but always seemed to be a little off. With the focus assist on the a6000 this turned out not to be an issue at all. The photos look very sharp, even the raw images look pretty dang good with no edits. Great color representation and my shots in darker museums even turned out surprisingly good. This looks like it's going to be a great travel lens for me and I'm happy with my purchase.
