Purchased for half off on ordering a 70D Kit from B&H. Took it to the local greenway; my first picture was a very sharp shot of a blue heron, allowing cropping to fill the frame, from quite a distance, with fine feather detail. I've since posted photos to Facebook for the first time since 2009, with tons of kudos received. Decent bokeh, did not notice anything bad, but with f4 to f5.6, you have to be careful, to have a non-busy background, as opposed to 1.8 to 2.8, where bokeh is easier. I used the 70-300 IS USM till recently - this lens is half the weight, and sharp at 250mm, while the 70-300 was soft at 300.

This lens is only good in the mid range 70mm-230mm, and even then not tack sharp. I am researching a replacement lens.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens:

I bought this to get a bit more camera time with my Rebel T3I outside of the normal lens that comes with the kit. I wanted something that I can use to focus on far away objects to take pictures from greater distances. Havent taken many photos but I like the lens.

For the money, you can't beat it!

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens:

Let?s keep it in mind that this lens is only $300, half of what the 70-200 f4L costs. In that same focal range, this lens compares extremely well to the L lens. Not 100% of course but very close. Sharpness, color and contrast are excellent. But again I must emphasize in the same focal range (70-200). Naturally a lens with such a broad zoom range won?t be so great at the extreme ends (especially in regards to vignetting and sharpness) but just about anywhere from 70-210mm it really performs well. Focusing is quick and accurate on a 7D Mk II. Considering its price, weight and overall performance, this lens is really a standout in Canon?s more budget friendly line up, and is an absolute must have if you don?t want to spend too much on a telephoto, not to mention it can fit in just about any camera bag!

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens:

I purchase this lens because the ring around my 72 to 300 lens broke. Also I'm about to travel and wanted to have a lens that would work for most situations and carry one camera. I have only used once at a Susan G Komen Race and was very please with the results. About to travel to Panama and will give another review upon my return.

Though it's a variable aperture lens, it still gets the job done. Having this mounted on Canon SL1, the auto focus is really quick. The IS really helps me keep a steady shot even at dust.

A pleasant surprise

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens:

After my 70-300 f/4-5.6 was stolen, I really struggled over what to replace it with. It was between the Tamron 70-300, my original 70-300, and this one. Price wasn't a major factor, but sharpness was. My Canon 70-300 was always sharp, even at 300, but the Tamron had mixed reviews on that front which narrowed things down. I ended up trying this lens instead of going back to the old 70-300 for three reasons. First, I really liked the compact size; second, it overcame a frequent issue with the old lens of 70mm being just a bit too long when wanting to do a quick portrait or using in closer quarters. 55mm is so much better. Finally, reviews made it sound like this was an extremely sharp lens. So, with prospects of getting a 100-400mm lens soon to cover the 300mm+ range, I decided on this one as my "walk-around" zoom. Already it has proved itself excellent and every bit as sharp as the reviews suggested. Arguably, this is sharper than the old 70-300, and so much lighter and compact. This is a neat lens, and the excellent image stabilization is just icing on the cake.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens:

I had a 55-250 a year ago, and also had a 70-300. I decided to sell the 55-250 thinking the 70-300 would satisfy my desire for a bit more reach without sacrificing image quality. After all, the 70-300 was more substantial in size, build, and weight, and the IS was nothing short of amazing. However, images of wildlife weren't consistently sharp, or bright, and most had a softness that could have been right for portraiture, but not wildlife. Similar images (subject, distance, ISO, aperture, shutter speed) using a Nikon 55-300, on a D5500 were noticeably sharper, and brighter. I pulled up images captured with my old 55-250, and found they were superior to similar images taken with the 70-300. So, I've sold the 70-300, purchased a new 55-250, and will use my feet to make up the focal length difference. The 55-250 is quite a bit lighter, fits in my bag when it's on my camera body as well as when it's off, and the IQ is, in my opinion is consistently better than what I was able to get from the 70-300.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens:

In addition to my other Canon bodies and lenses, I own the EOS M3 and the EF and EFS lens adapter, which is needed to use this lens with the M3. I have found that my M3 has become my "go to" camera body for taking hikes and in applications where weight is a factor. Needing a medium range telephoto lens, I purchased the EF-S 55-250mm lens. While this lens certainly is a lower price range lens, it performs rather well. And, I was pleasantly surprised to find that, with the Vello 10mm and 16mm extension rings available from B&H it does a very respectable job as a macro lens. The bottom line is that I am very happy with the lens.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens:

This is one of the few Canon lenses that I would recommend with my eyes closed to anyone using an APS-C camera. L lenses are exceptionally good, but also very expensive. This 55-250 mm is very, very good outdoors, has excellent image quality and great sharpness. All that for half the prize of the 70-200mm F4L while offering a wider and longer ends. It is also light and autofocus is smooth and silent. The only thing I don't like (hence the 4 stars) is the plastic mount.
I use it mostly outdoors, and the results are consistently very good. Indoors is a different story, but you can still get decent results with proper lighting.
This is an inexpensive lens with great optics, do yourself a favor and don't put a cheap plastic UV filter on it. You are much better off buying a hood.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens:

I do think the quality of the lens is great. I'm not so fond of the 55mm low end range of the lens though. It is a fairly narrow lens. Being used to an 18-270mm lens (which I don't think is a real 270), it is very nice to have the ability to use it as my one go-to lens if I don't want to carry the whole case. This one wouldn't be very suitable for an all-around lens. So buy it if you want a great zoom, but don't have much for other requirements.

I purchased this lens to go with a lighter weight system (Canon SL1 and Canon 24mm pancake) I put together for more "casual" photography. I am really amazed at how sharp this lens is. Not as consistently sharp as my Canon 70-300L but when stopped-down to F8, it's very, very close. Add the sharpness to controlled chromatic aberration, limited flare and distortion, and you have a real bargain at this price!
