Fantastic Lens

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Black):

I was studying up on old fashioned prime lenses when I chanced upon this lens, which is unavailable in Australia. The wide angle, the depth of field scale and the 18cm close focus meant it would be ideal for model train photography.

It is a beautifully made lens, like the old 50mm lenses you used to get on the Pentax K1000.
The depth of field is amazing, especially important on shooting model trains in close proximity to the lens, it's extremely sharp and it gives such fine detail, I realize now I have a few dead pixels on my sensor, which I hadn't seen before using my normal day 18-250mm lens !

There is no distortion whatsoever.

It would have to be the best lens to get for serious model train photography !

Excellent Wide Angle Prime Lens

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Black):

Everything is great about this wide angle prime lens. I do a lot of hiking and this lens is much smaller and much lighter than my wide angle zooms...and everything across the frame is in perfect focus too. The build quality is outstanding ...very well made and very easy to use.

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Silver):

The Pentax DA 15mm 3.5 has very good reviews, so I took the chance when the item got in offer. I bought it for a travel to India and Nepal due the small form factor and weight. Image quality surpassed my expectations! Also I bought it in a hurry and B&H delivered faster than I thought, just in time for our long travel. Great service!

Nice small Super Wide Angle Lens

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Silver):

Love the build quality of this metal super wide angle (about 22.5mm focal length in Full Frame terms) lens. Was debating between buying this lens and the 10-24mm Wide Angle zoom. I'm glad I went with this smaller, lighter weight option.

Wonderful little piece of glass. Exceptionally well built compact lens. A little distortion as expected from this focal length. Renders colors beautifully.

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Silver):

I am in the midst of changing from zoom lenses to a series of primes. The primes give better image quality and as importantly they make me consider the shot before I click the shutter.

I had the Pentax 12-24 and while a great lens it is also huge, and made me a lazy photographer. I purchased this DA 15 (and the DA 21); I believe my photographs are superior with the primes.

The 15mm HD has different (and most would consider inferior) starbursts to the previous SMC model but the current 15 handles flare much better. The 15mm is a bit too wide for a walk around lens but, then again, wearing it on my K-3 for a day challenges me to see differently, and that's not a bad thing.

All in all, this is a great lens, and I'm beginning to think for the active amateur, primes are a great choice.

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Black):

This lens just oozes quality build. It focuses quickly and quietly and the images with it are very clean and sharp.

Its focal length makes it is ideal for indoor use as well as for wide scenery shots. Images on the sides of the lens will be normal, though in the corners of the lens there is some stretch.

Between this prime 15 mm and my prime 50 mm I find I rarely need any other lens.

Only downside is max aperture of f 4.0. Bokeh is not necessary with a wide angle, but in low light it is a limitation when trying to capture moving children.

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Black):

I have been a Pentax equipment user exclusively for almost 50 years now. I always enjoyed their cameras' small size and their wonderful assortment of prime lenses. I currently own two DSLR's: an old IstDs which my wife uses with a DA 40mm f2.8 Ltd and a K5 which I use with the ubiquitous DA 18-55 mm WR, a DA 55-300mm and a collection of Pentax prime SMC – M manual lenses in 28, 50, 100 macro and 135mm sizes. I still regularly use those manual lenses and they perform as well today as they did when I first bought them (along with a Pentax MX film camera) some 35 years ago.

When I purchased the HD DA 15mm f4 Limited I was looking for a lens with a wider field of view than that provided by the kit zoom lens at 18mm while at the same time complementing my suite of prime lenses. I have so far taken about 50 test shots with it and I am extremely pleased with the results. The pictures are sharp and clear with excellent color rendition. I have observed none of the pronounced barrel distortion you get with the kit lens at 18mm or bulging of horizontal lines you can often see with more extreme wide-angle lenses. Depth of field (DOF) is incredible; if you step this lens down to f8 or f11 and use the DOF scale on the barrel to focus optimally, everything will be sharp from about the end of your extended arm to infinity. Those hyper sensitive to the screw driven autofocus noise can thus turn it off and enjoy perfect peace and quiet. If, as I do, you like to view your pictures on a large HD TV and you crop them to 16x9 format to fill the entire screen, you will find that this lens gives you a very pleasant vista. Instead of peering at the scene through an imaginary window, you will get the impression that you are actually standing out in the open. Not exactly a panoramic picture but a very interesting perspective nonetheless.

Finally, this lens' build quality is truly exceptional and it is an absolute joy to use. I am sure it will prove just as long-lasting and reliable as my old manual M series lenses.

I recently purchased this wide angle lens for my Pentax K10D to use for interior photo's of cabinets and other millwork that we manufacture at where I work. Being a rookie at doing this I was extremely pleased with the photos that I took, made me look like a pro. The quality of the prints were very good printed at 13x19 using the Cannon Pro 100 printer that I also had gotten from B&H.

Excellent prime lens for landscape and travel. Picture quality is outstanding. Solid built and light. I have the silver one and it is beautiful. Some users complain about the screw in lens cap.. I bought a SENSEI clip-on lens cap[$] to solve the problem. Also some mentioned the fact that it would be difficult to use Cokin/Lee filter systems due to the built in lens hood. I put a Hoya UV filter on it and it protrudes enough to get my COKIN system working. So... GREAT LENS, all positive!

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Black):

I'm comparing this jewel to my old 24 mm F2.8 Pentax (full frame lens) from the mid 80's. That was a great lens, albeit faster, but manual. Sadly I left that with an African friend along with an ME Super. The new 15mm should do fine and give me some wonderful perspectives, which I enjoyed so much with the 24 mm. It's so easy to use and now I don't need to concern myself so much with focussing, however I might need to check on closeups. While the lens cap is nice and solid, it is a bit of a trial. I'm guessing I'll use a filter so that will provide some contrast and protection. I have a few older 49 mm pinch style lens caps that will most likely be put to use. Great contrast and sharpness.

Comments about HD Pentax DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Lens (Silver):

I bought the 20-40mm and 15mm to replace the 16 - 45mm lenses. Although the 16-45 is a good lens, I was keen on extra sharpness and around quality. The 15mm is similar in sharpness in the centre but has far better sharpness in the corners and better contrast. I would like to use with street photography, so the smaller size is also nice. The bokeh is also nice and soft. Well made with a classy finish. Yes I would recommend this lens.

Have been using this lens for just over a month now, it's daily driver a replacement for my DA16-50mm, and I have yet to be disappointed. It's just a joy to use. And the image quality is just excellent, tack sharp. I would love if this lens was water resistant since I shoot a lot of landscapes, and often in damp weather. I'd highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for wide angle prime.

This lens is just as good as the reviews I read everywhere before deciding to buy it. I initially purchased a used copy and had to return it due to lack of sharpness in the corners and excessive chromatic aberration. I returned the used one and purchased a new copy which works great. I have tested the sharpness and taken a few dozen botanical garden scenic pictures which are all very sharp with great color definition. I am really pleased with the lens.

Pentax excels at small, brilliantly constructed prime lenses. Opinions will vary on whether the middle lens in a 3-prime set should be the 21mm, 31mm, 35mm, or 40mm. And for short tele, you've got the 70mm and 77mm. But for wide, this is it...and it's a great lens, too.

I knew this lens would be great for taking photos of rooms, landscapes and close ups of the noses of family members. However, one finds it works in lots of situations. It is no way a walk around lens, but it is a prime I will want with me and will use often.

The fact the lens is slow (only f4) is not a tremendous problem since at a focal length of 15mm, you can take shots at 1/30 or even 1/15 th of second and get away with it. I found the lens noticeably not as sharp wide open as when it is stopped down a little (in which case it is quite sharp).
