Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow XR1 Card Reader for XQD Cards:

Ordered this reader because I got a D4. It was nicly packaged & priced right. Best of all I worked well. no issues. right out of the box. The little blue light some people have complained about is a non issue. I pluses as the card down loads. A quick and easy way to see things are progressing.

Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow XR1 Card Reader for XQD Cards:

Works as I expected it to—USB3 is decently fast (I'm using Lexar x1333 XQD cards on a newish iMac). Takes 15-20min for a 64GB card to a mobile WD USB 3 drive (2TB). The one weird thing about this reader is how ridiculously bright the blue LED on the front is. I had to wrap it with 2 layers of color gaff tape, and one layer of spike tape just to bring it down. Little rubber cover it comes with seems unnecessary. I don't even know what side I'm supposed to be protecting with it (slot side, I would assume), but I'm sure it won't be long before I lose it. The cards pop in, but protrude a bit. Something to think about if you're building a tight DIT kit case. Other than that, it is what it is—a decent XQD card reader. Only used Lexar cards (64GB x1333 as mentioned) so I don't know if the Sony versions work with this reader. I've been using their older CF Firewire800 reader for years with no problems. Lexar is a trusted brand for me.

Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow XR1 Card Reader for XQD Cards:

This works great, in or out of the Workflow station. The only downside is that for some reason, the LED stays on, regardless of whether a card is in the slot or not. The other Professional Workflow modules do not have this problem. Aside from being a bit confusing, the light is very bright and annoying. Putting that aside, though, this is a marvelous card reader.

Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow XR1 Card Reader for XQD Cards:

This is a very good, compact and fast XQD card reader. Also, very portable. I use this reader as a standalone or with the HR1. Everything is great but I do have one complaint. The BRIGHT BLUE LED operation light for this module is so bright it lights up my entire office at night, blinding to say the least. All the other modules are not lit when not in use but this one stays on all the time, operating or not. I called Tech support and they said this was normal and the way this XR1 is programed...? I asked them to approach the engineers and do a review and make it the same as all the other modules for the HR1.

Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow XR1 Card Reader for XQD Cards:

This lexar reader works on its own as a USB 3.0 connected XQD card reader, or in the Lexar 4-bay hubs (Professional Workflow HR1 (USB 3.0), HR2 (Thunderbolt). I use it with the hub so I can have two running at once and a Compact Flash card reader in the hub as well - the joys of shooting with the Nikon D4.

This is one of the few XQD-readers available on the market as the card, which is amazingly fast, but isn't being used in many cameras yet - the Nikon D4/D4s and a few high end video cameras are the only units using it, so it may well die off in a few years. That would be sad though as the cards are lighting fast - I use them as my primary cards and CF cards as secondary. So the inclusion of XQD-capable readers in this series was a huge plus for me.

I think these individual units are overly large for their purpose, which exacerbates things in the even larger hubs, but they are at least rugged and solidly built. They have a too-bright operation light that you may find distracting - I'm considering some semi-transparent tape to reduce the intensity while still allowing it to be visible.
I also wish these units had both Thunderbolt and USB connections (they only offer USB 3.0) - they can be used in the Thunderbolt Hub that will ship soon however.

              • Only Works With Xqd Cards

              Best Uses

Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow XR1 Card Reader for XQD Cards:

It works perfectly with this newer card that had advantages of both CF and SD cards, but with higher read/write speeds than either. I hope, however, that this device doesn't end up in the wastebasket of history, as did Sony's Betamax format, as it is only used in DSLRs by Nikon's D4/D4s and some other esoteric imagining devices.

My problems are that 1/ the blue indicator light is extremely bright and is always on, so it sits detached from its cable until needed, and 2/ it only is usable with XQD cards, so you still need anther card reader if you use CF cards. SD card slots seem to be universal in the newer laptops.

Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow XR1 Card Reader for XQD Cards:

I really did not want to purchase another card reader but I recently purchased a camera that uses the XQD card. I looked long and hard at the readers on the market; specifically for a reader that reads several cards. I could not find one that included the XQD card. They do not exist. The Lexar reader is small reader that does have USB capability. The reader will download 64 MB in little time as a result. I only purchased the reader; not the tower unit that would allow you to bundle up to four readers in one unit. If I have a need for another currently unsupported reader, I will look for a Lexar that matches this.
