I'll review the softbox itself separately (on the page for the separate item), and focus here on whether you need the kit. There are basically two parts to that decision — the lightstand and the deflector plate. In short: the stand is not terrible. The plastic clips are a little flimsy and I'm a little worried about their long term use, but they're not horrible or falling right off (unlike some cheap gear I've gotten). The stand is light-duty, but appropriate for the weight of the rapid box plus a pretty decent-size flash. I didn't have any worries about putting it to full height and tipping the bracket downward — at least, indoors. Also, if you are space-constrained, you can use the legs at less than full extension to fit into a tighter space. That obviously makes it a bit less stable, but good enough in many situations. The deflector plate is another story. I've seen many comments calling this a basic necessity and lamenting that it isn't just included. It definitely *is* annoyingly overpriced at $[$]stand-alone, but if you are using this as a softbox, it produces a strong center shadow. For even light, what you need instead is a push-on (Sto-Fen type) diffuser for your flash (or, failing that, at least flip down the wide-angle panel). The deflector plate is really only for when you actually want to emulate a beauty dish. So, bottom line: if you're in need of a light-duty lightstand, this is a fine way to get it and you basically get the beauty dish deflector plate for free. Or alternately, if you want the deflector plate anyway, you get the stand for only about ten bucks more. But if you don't really want or need either, just get the softbox alone.

It broke after two (2) uses - Rivet came out

A rivet broke holding one of the metal rods on the 2nd use. It's rather delicate and I'm not surprised it didn't last long even with careful use.

I won't buy this product again. I called Wescott and they don't offer replacement rivets and want me to send it back which is nice but I can't use such a delicate piece of equipment. I need equipment that does not break the 2nd time you use it

Silly if you don't buy the set

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

The rapid box is surpreme and I am not sure I need to write much about it as youtube and the comments are already plenty. If you want to buy it with the reflector plate (USD20) it would be silly not to take this set: it would be USD 189 without the stand. Agreed: the stand is a bit whobbely and has no air cushion but a USD 10 stand can always be parked for a permanent task like holding up a collapsible background or so. If not sell it for USD 25 and make some profit :)

Works fine. Quality seems marginal. The fabric is very thin and light-duty. We'll see if it holds up after repeated use.

Super quick to set up and easy use. Works as advertised but won't replace a large octa with a more powerful light.

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

I ordered 2 of these to help with some studio work - I didn't want to invest in expensive strobes, etc. and this looked like a good option to allow me to keep using Speedlites. Set up was very easy and items seemed to be well made. The stands might need some additional weight in a windy setting, but for indoor work they are great.

I only did some test shots to get a feel for how these enhance my off camera flash and the results were good. You have a lot of options - with or without reflector plate, with or without diffuser screen, optional grid, etc. I even tested these with my Omni Bounce on my flash and got very good results.

Overall, I feel this product is worth the money. It does what it is advertised to do, is easy to set up and use, and appears to be a good value for the money.

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

TheOctaBox is just fine--good product, well built and opens and closes easily. There have been comments about the quality of the stand. Yes, it is not a great stand, but it works and as part of the kit, worth it. The real question, in my mind, has to do with metal defuser. The instructions (a label on the defuser) say put the convex side to the flash. If you do that and use the cloth defuser, you will have a black spot in the center of the cloth. If you reverse the metal that black spot is gone. When asking reps from Rapid Box, you may get told as I was, not to use both the metal and cloth defuser together. You will not get that answer from all of the Reps. You will have to decide for yourself.

Excellent softbox with some chintzy accessories.

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

I'm going to echo what some of the other reviewers of this item have said. When I purchased it, I knew I was going to need an additional light stand to mount it, so I bought it the full kit. The softbox itself is a breeze to set up and seems relatively well constructed - in the past three weeks, I have taken it to five locations, two of which were outdoors, and have been very pleased with its build quality so far. The diffusion panel is also pleasantly quick to mount.

The light stand is another story. The stand is very light, which means it's easy to carry (hooray!), but feels a bit top-heavy once you stick the softbox and a flash on it (oops).  Put it in a strong breeze and it can become a problem.  Additionally, two of the screws on the bracket  were not well machined, so it was very difficult for me to mount the softbox the first time, and I'm still unable to adequately secure the flash to the cold shoe. Now I'm looking at replacing the shoe.

As for the diffusion plate... to be honest, I have not been using it. I've either been using it in situations where there's a second flash & umbrella and some decent ambient light, or using it as an off-camera fill flash.  In these situations, you're not going to need the diffusion plate anyway, but it's not as if the center is going to be particularly blown out, especially not with the spokes of the umbrella in the way.

To sum up - if you already have a light stand, or are sure you're going to need something that can take a beating, skip out on the kit and just go with the Rapid Box itself, which is a great product. If you don't mind cheaping out a bit on the accessories, go for the full kit.

(This photo is from a headshot session I did for a middle school's drama club. Note the Extremely Fancy Bulletin Board Paper I used because I didn't have a seamless background.)

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

I have used the Rapid Box several times for outdoor portraits. It is very easy to set up, really a matter of minutes to have everything up and ready to use. I like the carrying case for the soft box, would like to have one for the light stand as well.
Design wise, it seems a little weak where the actual box connects to the flash bracket, basically one self tightening nut that holds everything in place. It was pretty loose the first time I used it, but a little fixing at home and it seems to be fine now.
Using the soft box is a big step forward in terms of quality of light when compared to an off camera flash with a diffuser.

Affordable Soft BOX

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

I have only used it a few times so far but I'm very happy with the results, the design is great, but the materials could be a bit better, but for the price point I'm not complaining. It is probably better suited to keep it set up in your studio than for frequent travel and heavy use. It is light weight and easy to set up and it looks great, the stand is also great quality for what you are paying. The light is soft and even, it works as advertised, looking forward to further testing, but is definitely worth the money if you are looking for your first soft box/beauty dish!

I think I might need two!

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

This is the first softbox I've owned. I used it with a Canon Speedlite 430EX & two Cactus Transceiver V5s - and used a small circular reflector to bounce some light to soften and minimize the shadows I was getting. It worked for a simple restaurant shoot where they wanted some of their signature dishes photographed. I think that having a second one would help me balance out the light where it falls off in the background.
The product itself is well constructed and easy to set up.
My only gripe is that I wish the carry bag was big enough to hold the stand too.

Super easy to set up, throws great soft light for on the go shooting outside of the studio. I really liked using this rather than battery pack strobes as it is easy to move to new setups and suites my get up and go shooting style. great stuff!

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

Have not had much time to fully test the softbox but initial results have been good. Use it for portrait/headshots. Packs small in a nice carry case and sets up easy. Matches well to my Canon 430 EX speedlight. Came with reflector disk which is an accessory but seems like a necessity given that the softbox is relatively small and not very deep; may not get much light spread without the disk.
