I purchased this device to backup my photos and homemade videos. My college kid in graduate school uses it to access, and backup, his files and papers from any public Wi-Fi access point.
I run Windows 7/8, while my son likes Mac OS. I have it hard wired to my home LAN, and hard wired access is lightning fast. Using my wireless devices to connect to it via my home LAN is not as fast, because speed is limited by your wireless device's wireless card, or by your LAN.
It does faster hard drive backups than my Windows Server 2008 R2, which is configured as a file server. My Cloud has support for Apple's backup protocol, which my son uses for his IPad. He also runs a MacBook connected to MyCloud, which he uses to share files with all of Apple devices.
The remote access works by using a special application to log into a Western Digital secure web site, which is dedicated to communicating with your My Cloud. The web site communicates with your My Cloud, while your device communicates through the web site to your My Cloud. Simple.
The My Cloud remote application uses a drag and drop interface, which looks similar to Windows Explorer, to transfer files between the cloud and your local device's storage memory.
Remote connection peed seems to be limited by more your internet connection and your remote device than by My Cloud. I have connected at home in three ways, with varying speed connections. One, a laptop connected via a network cable is FAST. Two, a laptop or tablet connected via wireless to my local LAN runs about 1/4 to 1/2 the speed of a network cable, depending upon the device.
Three, a laptop, or a tablet, connecting via the internet on my home LAN is as fast as transfering large files to/from most any web site. Upload and download apeed is frequently limited by your internet provider. Naturally, a laptop using a network cable to connect to the home LAN is way faster than one connecting wirelessly, by a factor of 3 in my case.
Oh yeah, before I go, I also use it with my DLNA enabled, wireless blu-ray player to stream home videos onto my TV. NICE.
Hope this helps someone.

I have had this NAS now for three years and it has been an excellent storage and access device for the many large files which would otherwise clutter up my computers. The WD software, now in version 3, is very easy to use and can be configured for personal cloud access from mobile devices via a WD webpage. Operationally, it has been excellent and works extremely well with both PC and Mac.

There are a couple of limitations. Being a small, inexpensive unit with limited memory, the MyCloud is limited in its read/write speeds. However, it still holds up well streaming video content via HTPC with apps like Kodi.

Its biggest limitation, however, is the fact that it is a single drive. Good as it is, it's an awful lot of responsibility to place on a single WD Red drive. Good as it undoubtedly is, a WD Red is still one hrd drive. It's a high quality, enterprise grade drive and MTBF is likely to be somewhat higher than consumer units. But in the end, you get what you pay for and despite its obvious limitations, it is actually an excellent product. The only realistic alternative is to shell out more and get a multiple drive system, which is what I'm in the process of doing.

This is a small, quiet, good looking and inexpensive product which works as advertised. It has sat on my kitchen bench for three years running my movies and my Time Machine backup without a squeak.

So far it worke fine

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

I have had this NAS storage device for just few weeks, and so far it works fine. As long as it is connected to a gigabit network and your computer is also connect to the network or switch data transfer is pretty fast, close to the actual gigabit limit. For me, wireless transfer is another story. Here the connection is not as fast but still acceptable to me. My one disappointment is related to the fact that when you create a cloud web account, your device is accessible from the internet by default. Because of security issues this is something I did not want. I did figure how to turn that off. That should be made clear when setting up an account. Even though the web access is password protected, I do not want personal information to be accessible over the internet.

Great hard drive, so-so cloud

By Allan

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

I wanted my own personal cloud to backup photos for safekeeping and to access them from anywhere in the world (where there is good WiFi). The WD Cloud drive installs in seconds (with ethernet cable to modem and power cable to AC outlet). Software is required from the WD website to connect computers to the WD Cloud device. From my MacBook Pro, it worked flawlessly. The day after I installed this, it installed a firmware update and I lost all the folders/files I had already uploaded to WD Cloud. I started over again and the Macbook pro works flawlessly and file transfer is rapid. I worry that I will lose these files again if another firmware update occurs - we'll see but doesn't instill confidence. On my PC, I had to go searching for the installed device on My Network drives (not as intuitive as on the Mac, but what is?). Unfortunately, I keep losing connection to this network drive from my PC so I have to transfer files via a USB cable (so the Cloud feature is useless). I've lost hours trying to figure out how to stay consistently attached to the WD Cloud drive without success. If I had to do all over again, I would just buy a regular external HD (without a Cloud feature) and transfer my files the old fashioned way - via USB cable.

Extremely slow and underpowered

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

Data transfer rates are incredibly slow, especially compared to all these USB 3.x drives that have come out. The device often bogs down from a simple transfer also. It comes with a "Cloud" interface that you can access, but that in and of itself is also extremely slow.

I would not recommend this product at all; consider something a little more decent.

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

Honestly this just stays unplugged most of the time... The data transfers are incredibly slow as compared to my older Elements Drive. I mainly just end up using this for archival purposes. There is a way to set this up to access remotely via the web through a WD site, but again its reaalllyyy laggy.

Very disappointed

By Kevin

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

I was able to get the product to back up ok, although it can only back up a single drive automatically. So my photos, on a D drive, can't be backed up unless I change the settings.

I could not get the cloud part of the drive to work. after two aborted email help desk attempts (email help desk? how useless), my problem was escalated at WD. The escalation guy was much better. But he had to rename drives to get the cloud to work. Then the files would not open on my android.

I just wanted a way to access lightroom photos on multiple machines (laptop, phone, etc). This was not it. I returned it. Bought just a backup drive for less. Will explore more robust cloud storage instead

Doesn't work as advertised

By Kevin

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

I seems to be able to backup files - it shows the storage has been used - but I can't see or access them.  In addition, the files that are backed up are not available on a personal cloud.  Apparently, each file must be individually moved to a cloud folder before it is on the cloud.  With 30,000 photos, this will take me a while.  As such it is mostly overpriced backup storage.

I need to find a better solution for backup and access from other devices, and am returning this in the meantime.

Tried WD support - it is a series of email exchanges only - totally useless.  The on-line manual includes instructions to do things that I can't see (using left panel, click on< > - but I don't even have a left panel!).  Admittedly, I am not terribly computer competent.  But they could use screen shots in the instructions to make it easier.

The unit is very quiet, however, so there is that.

I plugged this into my Mac Airport Extreme Base Station and it works great. Set up was easy. Now all my computers in the house are backed up automatically. I use Time Machine to automatically back my computers up to this drive. It has plenty of room for all my photographs and other data.

Nicely integrated network storage solution

By DougB

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

I purchased the 4TB My Cloud Personal to replace an 8+ year old network drive on my iMac. I was pleasantly surprised with the functionality that is provide by the My Cloud solution. The drive is configured to have a User folder, Public folder, as well a TimeMachine backups on an iMac. The folders can be accessed from your local network as well as externally over the internet once you register the device. I am using the User space to automatically backup my Documents, Music, and Movies folders from my Mac. Multiple Users are also supported. Note that this is a backup of the most recent files, not a historical backup as is done with TimeMachine. A neat feature was that once I configured my iPhone with the "My Cloud" app that I was able to create a backup of my photos within my user space. This is then very convenient for directly bringing these photos into other applications on my Mac such as Lightroom or Photoshop.

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

Have connected this to my Archer C9 TP link router for NAS. My first NAS. Main purpose was time machine backups and storage for my raw photos from the SLR. Was a breeze to setup. Time machine works flawlessly. WD sync also running in the background.
The only thing I have not tried is backing up which may be needed in the future.

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

After fooling around with Microsoft Home Server 2011 and Server 2012, I decided to simplify things and go with this NAS box. It is easy to setup and configure. Like others have said, it may be best to set the IP address to static so that you can always find it on your network. Remote connection is easy and I was quite surprised at the download speed when away from the house. One of the best features is to use it as a movie server and watch any video I have stored on any computer / XBOX / Playstation / Roku I have in the house connected to my home network.
