I don't understand why this lens has anything less than 5 stars from anyone.

Yes, there is vignetting when shot wide open. No, there's no Image Stabilization. Yes, it's only f/2.8.

SO WHAT?

This lens is TINY and weighs almost nothing. When attached to a Sony A7ii, you don't need anything faster than f/2.8. The image stabilization allows me to shoot at 1/20 very safely, and I've included a handheld shot below shot at 0.8 seconds!!!!

The only competitor to this lens is the 35/1.4. It costs over double and weighs FIVE times more. Do you want to carry FIVE times the weight all day?

I'm spending 2 years traveling the world and this lens is what is on my camera 99% of the time. It's absolutely stellar.

The only real advantage of this lens is its size and weight. Very portable and lightweight and this, together with its 35mm focal lenght, would make it a great default lens to keep on the camera almost always (or so I thought). However, the images it produces suffer from heavy vignetting at most apertures. The greater the aperture, the worse the vignetting. It is really horrible when used at f/2.8.Other features like autofocus and sharpness are just average, not bad but also not exceptional. No image stabilization. At this price range, I would expect a much better product.

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

It is very small and light. It is also extremely sharp. Finally, I like the width it provides, perfect for a walk around lens. It is actually an excellent lens that I would strongly recommend to anybody. It's on my camera since I bought it!

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

The main reason I got an A7RII was the smaller size, and this lens definitely keeps the overall package very compact. It is amazing for travel.

The lens itself is great - very sharp and super small. Quality and portability are amazing but, for the price (nearly $800 when I bought it)... I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Sharp and compact, but that's about it

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

What I like:
- Extremely small and lightweight.  The smallest full frame FE lens on the market.  With this lens on I can fit my A7rii in a large coat pocket.
- I found the lens sharp, even wide open
- Build quality is very good.  Manual Focus ring is knurled and a good resistance.
- Quick Autofocus
- Lens hood is clever and only adds to it’s compact design

What I don’t like:
- Awfully expensive for a prime lens that is not very fast (only 2.8) and doesn’t feature a AF/MF switch or a Focus Hold button
- The 35mm focal length is a bit odd.  Not quite long enough or fast enough to be an ideal portrait lens, not quite wide enough for landscapes and cityscapes.

The low-down:
If you’r looking for a lens that will make your camera as small and compact as possible, this is the lens you are looking for.  Excellent build and sharp throughout.  On the otherhand, if size isn’t that important to you, then I would look at a faster prime lens or the 24-70mm f2.8 G-Master.  Some people love the 35mm focal length saying it’s the best of both worlds (wide and zoom).  I’m afraid I lean a little more glass half empty.  Not quite wide enough for most landscapes I take, nor do I find it ideal for taking portraits.  When small and inconspicuous is important, I throw on this lens, but otherwise it’s my G-Master or a faster prime.

Great Compact Lens for A7 Cameras

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

What I like:
Light, super small and compact.  When placed on my A7rii, the entire camera and lens fit into the palm of my hand.  Easily fits in a large coat pocket or small bag.  35mm is a good focal length for travel and street photography.  I found it a little short for portraits, but there is so much resolution, cropping still yields very detailed photos.  I found the lens very sharp, even wide open.  Color and tone of photos is very pleasing.  I was also surprised at how shallow depth of field I could actually get with this lens.  Pleasing bokeh.  Software adequately addresses vignetting.  Hood and lens cap design is brilliant and adds to its compactness.

What I don't like:
$800 is a lot for lens that doesn't have a AF/MF switch, Focus Hold button, OIS or a large aperture.  Having to hold down the AF/MF button on the back of the camera to activate the MF is not convenient, nor is diving into the Menu system.  I think Sony has heard enough complaints that the latest batch of new FE lenses have come with a AF/MF switch.

Bottom Line:
Should be at the top of the list for any photographer looking to make their camera as small, light and as portable as possible while delivering sharp, beautiful images.

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

I purchased this one to replace my 1.8 E 35mm because of moving to a full format body. So far, I'm very pleased with the lens. It is sharp and oh so light. Will wait to develop pix on a full screen before opining on vignetting and bokeh.

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

Love this lens for street photography. It's light and compact, making it super easy to take photos on my way to work.

I've noticed some pretty severe vignetting--though it was easily removed in Lightroom.

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

My go-to 35mm lens is a manual focus Zeiss Loxia f/2, but for a compact, lightweight, auto-focus alternative for travel and street photography, you can't beat the Sony Sonnar FE 35mm f/2.8 lens.  As others have noted, there can be slight vignetting and/or distortion in some situations, but these are easily correctible with the available Adobe Lightroom profile.  The Sony 35mm 2.8 build quality is quite good and very similar to the excellent Sony FE 55mm 1.8.

For me, lenses are like paint brushes and the Sony FE 35mm 2.8 allows me to think less about the science of what I'm doing and more about the art.  Whether attached to my a7II or a7RII, it's presence is low profile and allows me to subtly capture images without announcing my presence.  While I have larger and more expensive pieces of glass, this humble little 35mm lens reminds me most of what attracted me to the compact but highly capable Sony a7 format to begin with.  And while this optic it is not perfect in every aspect, thereby getting 4 stars instead of 5, it is an ideal companion for street and travel photography.

I chose this particular lens to go with the Sony a7 because it's small, lightweight and weather sealed. Great for carrying around my neck while riding my bicycle.
I haven't used it enough to rate it 5 stars.

The a7Rll's version of a pancake lens. It's excellent for it's intended purpose which is a small capable walk around lens for this camera and it's affordable.

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

This lens is great. I use it on a Sony A7rii and love it. It's a bit overpriced, especially considering it's 2.8, but once you see the images it's hard to say no, especially if you want to buy into the Sony ecosystem. I was previously shooting with Canon and Sigma lenses (which I also love) adapted to the Sony with the Sigma MC-11 adapter, which is woefully underrated. I did however desire to switch to Sony lenses to get all of the focus features and the lightning fast focus speed, which has been a game changer.

If you're willing to dish out on Sony's premiums I'd highly recommend the lens.

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

I bought this lens two weeks ago. I could not be happier! Great product. The best lens I've ever owned. I use this lens for traveling, social media, and blogging. It's very compact for a full frame camera, unlike common DSLR lens. The image quality is stunning. I researched the best lens for the Sony A7ii for over a year and this one can up on top ever time. This is the only lens I own for the A7ii and it'll be that way for some time. Fantastic lens!

Comments about Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens:

The lens produces crisp and sharp pictures.  The color is amazingly colorful.  It is very small and light when mounted on my A7.  The downside of this lens is a price which seems to be quite expensive.  Anyway, I recommend to everyone who uses any A7 series cameras.
