Why Nikon?
Simply saying I like Nikon. It may be funny, but as to me, Nikon brand is like Stradivari brand for violins.
I have several generation Nikon cameras from FE10 to F65 and therefore several lenses equipped with Nikon mount.
Why this model?
It seems to me to be a gold milestone between digital and film cameras. Quick response like film cameras completed with sophisticated automatic features. From another side, full frame cameras are too expensive for me because I earn money mostly by another way, I'm not a professional.
The main reason of choosing this model is resolution specifications of the most photo stocks. My proved Olympus SP-350 don't meet these requirements by a little piece.
There are several attempts to try my new Nikon D5300 with previous lenses.
It is possible to use the Zoom-Nikkor 35-70 with Nikon D5300 (5300+3570) but only for taking still pictures like this one (#3570_01) because difficulties with exposure control (manual try-shot-check-try type) and sharpness control problem (I checked the main subject sharpness at camera monitor).
Another turn of testing was the set of Nikon D5300 with AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200. It was not bad idea because greater focal length of this lens mounted at DX-format camera. It was not good idea because lack of automatic sharpness control in this option. But a combination of Nikon D5300 + AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200 is alive and useful for taking still pictures (#28200_01), architect details (#28200_04) and perfect for landscapes (##28200_02, 28200_03). This lens can serve as auxiliary long focal lens because format transition from full-frame to DX cameras.
The great feature of Nikon D5300 consists of traditional optic viewfinder and folded display. In some cases, for example, occasional shots in the streets and public places takes a few seconds and do not pull attention of surrounding people, comparing with contemporary manner to take pictures viewing at the camera display. However such manner requires some training of photographer.
The choice of lens is defined mostly by photographer style, I mean. Thus I prefer AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 lens which completely fit my behavior as photographer. By the way, I was pleasured with wider angle of AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 comparing with this one of AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200 attached to the full-frame camera, 76 degrees vs 74 degrees. There are several pictures made within full range of focal length (18 mm: ##18140_02, 18140_04, 18140_06, 20 mm: #18140_03, 24 mm: #18140_07, 27 mm: # 18140_09, 66 mm: #18140_01, 90 mm: # 18140_05, 140 mm: # 18140_08) and under various lighting conditions.
Also I like a GPS option, it is handy in most situation.
The Nikon D5300+ AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 provides me all opportunities for enjoying with photography!

I purchased the Nikon D5300 for my B-Day in December 2013 from BH Photo. The Auto Focus will only work in live liew and not through the view finder. I have shot less than 50 pictures. Today, I contacted Nikon USA regarding the issue. They want me to send back the body for service. I am a little disappointed in the product. I know that it is not the lens because I purchased the same camera for my spouse at that time. That camera is working fine with all of our lenses at this point. I now have to pay the shipping cost and insurance cost for this defective product. I will be caution about further purchases from Nikon. I am giving this product 3 star because of the focusing issue.

So much lighter than 8 year old DSLR!

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Red):

What an upgrade. Nikon's menu system is a bit confusing, but the quality of the images is such an improvement over the 8 year old DSLR it replaces. And is so much lighter.

Perfect for any level of Photography.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

My Father, has been involved with photography since age 12 (thanks to his Mother). He is the proud creator/owner/workaholic, of Darkroom Imaging (Darkroom Imaging.com), in Rome, New York. And both of us are like little kids watching fire trucks, when it comes to receiving a package from B&H Photo.
My father's current Nikon, is the D750. I, cannot afford such a luxury. So, I went with the D5300, and the camera body was shipped to me on March 31st, 2017.
I have not taken many images with the D5300, as I am quite fond of the Nikon P610 and Nikon AW120, which I bring with me...everywhere.
The Nikon D5300, has no touch screen display. Seriously. How many really need that extra luxury cost of a touch screen? Nothing worse than getting greasy smudges on your display screen. I prefer no touch screen. The D5300, has a Max ISO of 12,800. The max ISo of the D5500, is 25,600. I've taken a few deep sky images, using the ISO of 5000 with a three second exposure, is perfect.
If doing photography of mushrooms or insects out in nature, you may want to purchase a better flash. As with long lenses, you may get a shadow effect with the standard flash.
3-D tracking and Dynamic Area AF mode, work flawlessly when tracking moving subjects such as people and birds.
The swivel LCD display is very convenient. Especially on bright sunny days and when doing macro-photography. Don't abuse it. It is plastic, and it can break. And using the viewfinder, can extend the battery life. I usually take many exposures at different angles of a subject, using the viewfinder, then applying those images to editing software. Choosing the best image.
I especially enjoy the, "Effects," and the "Scene," and "Macro," settings are handy -to-use. I especially enjoy toying with the HDR effect.
I would definitely rate the D5300, ahead of a majority of mirrorless cameras, in the same megapixel range. Small mirrorless cameras, just do not have a large sensor, as DSLR cameras. Therefore, the image quality can be effected.
What real improvements would I like to see? A camera by Nikon, that does-it-all, at a price that a majority of people can make sense of spending. It certainly would improve the profit of Nikon, other than coming-out with several camera models each year. To me...anything above six-hundred U.S. dollars, is a-lot for a camera. And to many people...six-hundred dollars, is a-lot of money for a single piece of equipment.
The image included is of my parents, on Father's Day, 2017. The only editing done on Photoshop, was putting a "Layer," over the original image. No sharpening. No color, added.
Nikon. There exists no substitute.

Spare D5300 for Landscape and Astrophotography

By David

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I spent over 4 months reading reviews and cross-referencing the D5xxx and D7xxx series looking at settings, functions, weight, sensors….. After all of that, I decided on purchasing the D5300. I have been using my D5300 for the past 8 months and I love it! I mainly us it for landscape and astrophotography. With astrophotography, the articulating screen is wonderful. Since my telescope is usually pointing in a direction and at a height, which would make it difficult to see the screen was stationary on the back of the camera. I also get a little crazy taking photos in various locations and conditions. This purchase was for a second D5300. I wanted a spare, in case my first one took an unexpected "dive".

Terrific Upgrade from D5000

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I shoot photos for publication and also for fun. I wanted to upgrade from the D5000, and chose the D5300 because it is the last in this series that does not have a touch screen. I like its faster shutter speed, better ability to deal with low light conditions, larger live view screen, and 24 versus 16 MPs. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

As always B&H came through on time with its delivery. The body works just like one would expect, and has a few nifty features that my old (broken) D5100 did not. (like time lapse photography)

Great pics...video not bad, but....

By Great Pictures...

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

It's a wonderful camera for pictures, sharp, fast, feels great in the hands! Love the fold out screen especially enjoy the tilting screen, wish it was touch screen though.

The video capabilities isn't bad, but I expected better. Focus is average, loud and needs to be easier and smoother for video, vlogging and film making. I am trying different lenses which I hope helps with the loudness, but the main issue is that the subject tracking during filming is an issue, which is a camera (software) issue.

May have to use this for photography and the Canon 70d for filming. Sucks...I'm a Nikon guy!

This replaces a D90 with which I was happy for many years. For my uses, the D5300 is simpler and outperforms the old camera in most respects. I find that for nearly all situations the default settings are hard to improve upon.
