First this the best Lightsphere that Gary has put out yet. Use it when shooting events and I really like the light quality compared to all the past models.
I know Gary referred this as a "5th generation Lightsphere" but this really should be considered the 6th generation. 3rd generation of the collapsible models.

Maybe no one noticed this but the first collapsible had a different mounting system that was vertical shark teeth for the grip and was thinner more transparent making it easier for the light to distribute through the sides and easier to fold up.

The next collapsible (recently discontinued) had horizontal ribbing for the grip mount and was made of a bit thicker material meaning tougher to collapse and didn't scatter as much light as the previous one did due the thicker material and a pain to put on larger flash heads like the SB900/910.

Enter the the Speed Mount. Much easier to mount on any flash now that Gary has incorporated the velcro strap system from his Universal Lightspheres and being how the collapsible model is already made of rubber eliminates the need of the rubber band placed on the flash head to keep it on the flash head.

It appears Gary went back to making the Speed Mount model thinner (like the shark tooth model previously mentioned) meaning it is easier to fold up and gives better light distribution through the sides.

The reason I know this is because I've owned all of them so I think I can make review that is fair in comparing them.

The Lightsphere Speed Mount is truly the best of both worlds. It has the easy mounting capability of the previous Universal Lightsphere models, the collapsible part that makes it compact and easy to store in your camera bag. It scatters the light more like the Universal Half-Cloud Lightsphere making the images more evenly lit with the exception that the Lightsphere Speed Mount gives you better color rendering in my opinion.
Like all Lightspheres it has beautiful wrap around light that other light modifiers just don't have. I would say this has everything a person would want in a flash diffuser.

At last, a belt buckle type speed mount that doesn't dangle loose and fall off my smallish Lumix 360L flash. This modifier works well with on camera flash indoors. Off camera, however, it produces ugly shadows that are no better than anything else

A flash modifier that spills light in every direction. For quick, indoor grab shots this works okay, but for creative off-camera flash I would prefer light output that is more directional. Outdoors, this flash modifier spills too much light into the open atmosphere, a waste of batteries.

Though far less cumbersome to use than my Lumiquest Big Bounce or Impact Quick box Micro portable soft boxes, the light sphere cannot match their light quality on or off camera.

I absolutely LOVE lightsphere!!!!! It's amazing! I was a bit skeptical at first because I didn't think something so inexpensive would change the way my photos look. I just took pics at a 1st birthday this past weekend and the lightsphere made a huge difference in my photos!!! I was soooo pleased and will continue to use it anytime I'm using my camera! My pictures look fabulous!!! No going back from here!!!

I was so excited until I used this first time on my Nikon SB910 flash. I do not see much improvement with this rather than adding a bulky plastic on top of your camera and adding weight. With flash tilt to different directions you can control the light better ways. its after 30 days from purchase. otherwise I would have returned this.

Improved on a great product

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

I have a previous version of the collapsible Lightsphere (not sure which generation). The current "Generation 5 Speed Mount" is both easier to use and will fit on smaller flashes. The mounting for the dome is also improved (easier mounting). When flash is needed, The Lightsphere itself works very well to provide more natural lighting for candid photography at home (kids on Christmas morning, puppies being puppies, etc.) or indoor gatherings like conferences, the infamous office party, and so on. In my home (white, 9-foot ceilings, light-coloured but not white walls, oriental carpets) I am getting good results with the Metz 52-AF1 pointed straight up or a few degrees forward, the camera on Aperture Priority, minimum shutter speed 1/60, and the Lightsphere dome inward/down. (During processing I warm up the colour temperature to more closely match our psychological expectations for the setting.)

Very happy it - bought two

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

Using two of these for real estate photography, very happy with the results.
Was pressed into doing an impromptu large group portrait and these worked better than I hoped.
Would have given 5 stars except wasn't thrilled with the Gary Fong.com branding on the cinch down strap (took a black marker to cover that over) and the dome is a bit fiddly to get placed in correctly.
Overall, for me, an excellent and very useful product.

Not sure about this yet

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

I have not used this whole lot yet...I do quite a few portraits and I am pretty good at getting what I need with just flash connected to my hotshoe. I was hopeful this would give me a little more pop in the eyes than it does. I am sure I just need more practice with it. I do use TTL and manual mode on my flash when I am not in a studio with lighting set up.

I saw the professional photographer used this weird looking diffuser at my relative's wedding and I searched some info about what this diffuser is about and bought the same one. I could take much better pictures with this diffuser.

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

Basically it throws light in all directions and the batch of images look flat, I expected that based on the design. There is little to no control of light. I'm going to try the SpinLight 360 and use bounced light for a more 3 dimensional look. Only other gripe (minor) is it looks unprofessional.

Not the tool

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

It spreads light in ALL directions which results in flat light on the subject. You lose the advantage of creating beautiful directional light via bounce from ceilings or walls. A small Sto-Fen box diffuser will give the same results for less than $10. Also the Vello Mini Softbox, mounts on the speed light, is less than $10 and will give directional soft light.

A whole other issue is it looks gimmicky, unprofessional, cheap tupperware look, and is awkward when moving around people. I also have the spin 360 which at least looks professional.

Always liked the Fong diffusers but felt they were a hassle to take on and off; FINALLY, that problem has been corrected in this latest design. Wonderful natural looking lighting while using a flash, thanks to this Lightsphere.

Happy with purchase

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

Did a quick test shot in vertical and horizontal mode with dome on and also off the light sphere. Product has visible shadows with the dome kept on the actual unit. Shadows are significantly softer and more subtle than with bare flash only. For shadow free results it is best to leave the dome off unit. Overall very happy with results. The light sphere sits very securely on the flash head and is easy to change from vertical to horizontal position with great ease. It is more difficult to secure dome on the unit when it is mounted onto the flash head. I found it easier to place it on when you had the lightsphere in both hands.
