First this the best Lightsphere that Gary has put out yet. Use it when shooting events and I really like the light quality compared to all the past models.
I know Gary referred this as a "5th generation Lightsphere" but this really should be considered the 6th generation. 3rd generation of the collapsible models.

Maybe no one noticed this but the first collapsible had a different mounting system that was vertical shark teeth for the grip and was thinner more transparent making it easier for the light to distribute through the sides and easier to fold up.

The next collapsible (recently discontinued) had horizontal ribbing for the grip mount and was made of a bit thicker material meaning tougher to collapse and didn't scatter as much light as the previous one did due the thicker material and a pain to put on larger flash heads like the SB900/910.

Enter the the Speed Mount. Much easier to mount on any flash now that Gary has incorporated the velcro strap system from his Universal Lightspheres and being how the collapsible model is already made of rubber eliminates the need of the rubber band placed on the flash head to keep it on the flash head.

It appears Gary went back to making the Speed Mount model thinner (like the shark tooth model previously mentioned) meaning it is easier to fold up and gives better light distribution through the sides.

The reason I know this is because I've owned all of them so I think I can make review that is fair in comparing them.

The Lightsphere Speed Mount is truly the best of both worlds. It has the easy mounting capability of the previous Universal Lightsphere models, the collapsible part that makes it compact and easy to store in your camera bag. It scatters the light more like the Universal Half-Cloud Lightsphere making the images more evenly lit with the exception that the Lightsphere Speed Mount gives you better color rendering in my opinion.
Like all Lightspheres it has beautiful wrap around light that other light modifiers just don't have. I would say this has everything a person would want in a flash diffuser.

At last, a belt buckle type speed mount that doesn't dangle loose and fall off my smallish Lumix 360L flash. This modifier works well with on camera flash indoors. Off camera, however, it produces ugly shadows that are no better than anything else

A flash modifier that spills light in every direction. For quick, indoor grab shots this works okay, but for creative off-camera flash I would prefer light output that is more directional. Outdoors, this flash modifier spills too much light into the open atmosphere, a waste of batteries.

Though far less cumbersome to use than my Lumiquest Big Bounce or Impact Quick box Micro portable soft boxes, the light sphere cannot match their light quality on or off camera.

Happy with purchase

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

Did a quick test shot in vertical and horizontal mode with dome on and also off the light sphere. Product has visible shadows with the dome kept on the actual unit. Shadows are significantly softer and more subtle than with bare flash only. For shadow free results it is best to leave the dome off unit. Overall very happy with results. The light sphere sits very securely on the flash head and is easy to change from vertical to horizontal position with great ease. It is more difficult to secure dome on the unit when it is mounted onto the flash head. I found it easier to place it on when you had the lightsphere in both hands.

This is a GREAT tool for any photographer looking for soft, even lighting indoors - especially in settings with low ceilings.  I am extremely happy with the results this has produced and can't imagine shooting indoors with flash without the Lightsphere.

This is an amazing product that instantly transforms your flash shots into a soft fill light. I just used my Gary Fong at a very dark indoor event and still achieved beautiful results.

I decided to purchase this light accessory to up my game in event photography in low light situations. It came as expected in great condition and at a price I couldn't beat anywhere else. I always expect the best from B&H since it's a standup , reputable company.

Well made and puts out plenty of light! This diffuser is more translucent than most so the loss of light (power) is fairly low. The "bounce plus diffusion" effect makes for a nice soft light.

Good choice for bad situations; unnecessarily expensive

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

Good build quality, can take abuse.

Used this in a wedding shoot at a park, outdoors in strong middday sun. Good for filling in shadows around face/body if you're after a portable solution, have nothing to bounce off of (like a ceiling or white walls) or fast setup if you can't bring or don't have time for modifiers (like umbrellas) and stands.

In my case, bride wanted quick (under an hour) park photos with 20 family members, before reception started.
We moved around to different parts of the park a few times.

A number of colleagues demonstrated similar cheaper lightsphere's having worked just as well, so I slightly regret the amount I spent on Gary Fong's version.

Overall it does the job in circumstances that wouldn't allow longer time or more equipment, although there are more affordable options.

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

I went to a wedding a few weeks ago and I saw a photographer using "The Fong" (Lightsphere). I had never seen anything like it and was very pleased that the photographer was willing to talk to me about it. To be honest, it looks like a giant light bulb on top of your flash unit but it works very well at diffusing the light in several different directions. I was getting ready to go to my class reunion so I ordered one and it arrived just in time (B&H offers great shipping...fast and free!). I knew that everyone would be asking me about it and was very happy to see another photographer there that was using one too!! For the money, it's definitely worth a try. I love being able to afford new photography equipment to "play with". It works great for reducing shadows!! Good Luck and get ready for people to ask questions when you use it because it definitely has a very different look!

I found the light sphere to help even out the flash from speed lights. Also helps control shadows. I like using it best off camera for more directional light.

EXCELLENT SPEEDLITE DIFFUSER

By bearybones

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

I use this on my Yongnuo Speedlite, with excellent results. The strap that secures the Lightsphere onto the Speedlite is secured by a Velcro tab, which holds the Lightsphere securely in place, on the end of the flash unit. This combination produces flatteringly soft light, without the harsh shadows, that are produced by a direct flash. The Lightsphere works as advertised. There are many very good, helpful tutorials on YouTube.

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

Just like your camera and its accessories, if you know how to use them, you will excell!
Other than my obvious most important items in my camera bag( camera body and lenses) this product is critical for any portrait , wedding or where people are the subjects.
If I ever forget I will turn around and go fetch it. Plain and simple. I can't see myself not using it for portraits. It's that important to my skill.

A big improvement over earlier versions!

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

No, it's not the optimal diffuser for every situation. Sometimes you might want a diffuser that is more directional. But if you want one the bounces beautiful, soft, flattering light all around a room, which is frequently a great way to go, this is the best diffuser I know of. Because it is omnidirectional and throws light everywhere, it is best used indoors where you have walls and a ceiling close enough to bounce light off of. And if you don't know how already, take a just few minutes to learn how to vary the strength of your flash for different situations. You'll be taking much better photos in short order!

I'm going to sell mine!

By Picture girl

from Palm City, Florida

Comments about Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible with Speed Mount (Generation 5):

I use this product to do real estate photography when it's not possible to bounce the flash off of the ceiling. The ceiling may be dark or too high so it's necessary to point the flash forward. I like the effect it has by softening shadows and evenly lighting the space BUT it is a pain to take on and off the flash head. The velcro and flaps are cumbersome and awkward and the dome pops out and falls to the ground more times than I care to bend over and pick it up. I regret spending the money on this.
