I bought and owned the Nikon 35mm F/1.8 from B&H months ago and I loved that lens. However, I sold it because I wanted to reach back to my old school 18-55mm range. I know..this is a kit lens, but hear me out. This lens is sharper then the Nikon 35mm and 50mm F/1.8 models. I don't see a lot of chromatic aberration either. The colors are nice and contrast isn't heavy. This lens is built solid and has a good balance on my D7100. This lens is killer for price and range, but it's a slow lens due to F/3.5-5.6. That's the only negative aspect I've experienced with it. If light isn't an issue...keep this lens if you received it in a bundle or buy it if you want an excellent lens in the 18-55mm range. Overall...I'm thrilled with this lens.

After purchasing another small light lens I decided I might lighten my load and purchase this lens as my walk around lens. I was expecting it to take images as sharp as the ones demonstrated on the Nikon website. The copy I received didn't. The center was sharp, but the edges were not and this was at f/8. I mistakenly had registered the lens and discarded the warrantee slip that was in the box, so now I have a lens that really isn't very satisfactory for anything that I would use it for other than to add weight to my camera bag. It was my own fault for not checking the lens more carefully before I registered it. I have no one to blame but myself. I certainly would not recommend this lens if sharpness is something of a concern to you.

Not a bad little lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens:

I previously wrote a review on my purchase of this lens based on my initial reaction to using it, which wasn't a very good experience. I really don't know what happened because the images didn't focus very well. I tried again today, and was pleasantly surprised. I used a smaller f-stop, f/11, and the images were crisp and the color was rich. I have decided that this will be a good walk around lens. The moderate zoom capability will come in handy, and the VR is something that I will definitely be able to take advantage of. The VR is truly effective, and contributes to the sharpness of the images. This is truly a handy little lens to have in your kit.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens:

It is an ok lens if it comes with your body like mine did, but I wouldn't advise anyone to go out and buy it just to have. Zoom ring is a little stiff in some areas out of the box. I have given up trying to use manual focus on it as it just isn't great and it is also loose.

If you need a point and shoot type lense with walk around range it will get you by just fine. If you need something faster, sharper and adequate manual focus.... look elsewhere.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens:

My 18-105mm DX f3.5-f5.6 kit lens that came with my D90 many years ago finally just feel to pieces (plastic mount gave out, loose elements and rings, etc.) after lots of great service. Instead of replacing it with a new copy of the same lens, I decided to "downsize" since I so rarely used it at longer focal lengths and already own a 55-300 zoom DX lens, along with the 10.5mm fisheye, 11-17mm Tokina w/Nikon mount and the f/1.8 35mm prime Nikkor. The latest reincarnation of the 18-55 mm DX lens is just what I needed...much lighter and tack sharp images. For the price, versatility and quality, it simply cannot be beaten. I'm thrilled with it as well as losing a bit of weight in the process. I keep it or the 35mm f/1.8 on my camera almost all of the time.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens:

I needed a more versatile lens for my D7000 body as I gave the original kit lens away. I needed something inexpensive and wider than the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 DX that normally lives on my camera. The optical quality and the VR effectiveness is truly surprising, especially considering the price. Of course the subject has to be STILL in relation to the camera but it's extremely effective in quelling unsteady hands. On top of this, this lens is extremely light and compact. I highly recommend this sleeper of a lens.

A Kit Lens That Can

By William

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens:

Yes, it's a kit lens. However, I've found it's a pretty darned good kit lens, and capable of capturing excellent images using a D5500, or D7200. I sold the D5500, and kit lens before buying my D7200. I didn't think I'd need the focal lengths because I picked up a 24-85 with the D7200. I was wrong. The 18-55 is compact, provides excellent color, and resolution, and the combination of a little extra width with the lens' physical size makes it a nice choice when working with people in crowded venues.

Surprised to learn this is not a top of the linelens

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens:

When this lens came without a pouch or hood and had only a soft plastic rear cap, I asked on a photography forum whether I should be concerned about other corners having been cut.

Several participants referred me to reviews and blogs saying that the D-series lenses were notably inferior to the G-series.

Not sure if that is true and in any case there was no G-series in this focal length, so I have no regrets, but do think Nikon is sending the wrong signal by making us pay extra for what had been included and that cheesey rear cap.

Its really useful, but sometimes sticks funny. (feels like I'm going to break something)

Bought this as a walk-around lens for my D7200 which I got body-only. After shooting a whole day with the 18-200 VR II as a trial I knew I wanted something much lighter for an everyday lens. This lens is sharp, easy to use, has absolutely zero focus kickback and eye-blow. Images are very sharp with the help of VR II. Did I mention it weighs nothing? A steal for what you get, replace it if you break it.

Sometimes I forget to unlock the lens, with the locking this thing gets so small it's worth having. Camera will tell me if I forget.
