I planned on getting the original Ray Flash. However, it was discontinued. I then discovered the Ray Flash 2. It was thinner AND cheaper. I got a chance to try it out last weekend in pitch dark with a test subject. I am pleased with the result.
I plan to test it when there is ambient on a planned shoot in a week. I expect good things based on what I saw from my test shoot.

I bought the original version of the RayFlash Ring Flash Adapter about four years ago. I generally liked using it as an occasional alternate to my larger studio ringlight on location. The problem I had was that the older Ring Flash did not fit the newer Canon Speedlite 600EX. (The flash tube housing was just a little larger.) So I finally broke down and bought the newest version. On the PRO side, it's lighter, seems to have better light efficiency (less light loss in output), works well with the E-TTL. However, on the CON side -- and my reason for only 3-stars -- is that it does not really fit/size well for use with the Canon 1Dx and the Speedlite 600EX. In an effort to economize manufacturing production, they have chosen to go with a "universal" size that fits either the larger cameras, or smaller cameras (RFU-L and RFU-S). And this is the weak link. There is NOT enough play in the stem of the Ring Flash to properly accommodate the Canon Pro body and the Speedlite. The opening for the lens DOES NOT properly allow a correct fit for the lens to slide through evenly. The bottom of the opening of the RingFlash presses against the bottom of the mounted lens, rather than having the lens "float" in the opening. This is exacerbated when using fast lenses, as I do, such as the Canon 85mm/1.2. Depending upon your camera/lens combo, the Ray Flash may work for you, but I am disappointed with the "universal mount" compared to the older, "custom mount" of the ring flash.

Effective but awkward

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash 2 Universal Ring Flash Adapter (Large):

I imagine any ring light is a handful, so it's probably not a fair criticism. The unit itself is light weight, but you've also got a speed light on your shoe as well. Depending on the lens, you may find zooming and focusing to be tricky. The unit also blocks your focus assist IR in low light settings. But even after all that, my portraits look great when I use this.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash 2 Universal Ring Flash Adapter (Large):

This is the perfect piece of companion kit to go with your Nikon SB-910 or soon to be SB-5000. It allows for that "ring flash look" without the need to buy a separate, cumbersome ring flash system. You simply attach the Ray Flash 2 when you need it, and just as easily pull it off when you don't. The only downside is that this thing is virtually nothing but plastic, yet they charge you $ for it. So when you get it and open the box, you may feel wanting for more, like I was. With that said though, compared to buying a separate, dedicated ring flash, this item is a steal. Even so, they should only be charging $ tops for this device, hence my 4 star review.

Good idea when in a pinch

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash 2 Universal Ring Flash Adapter (Large):

When you do not have access to or control over the light-- this ring flash will be a nice addition to your portrait camera bag. It's a little pricey but will add pleasing light to an otherwise dark and uninteresting portrait.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash 2 Universal Ring Flash Adapter (Large):

The Expodisc Ray flash falls very short of expectations. It is quite bulky and awkward to attach. The grip mechanism allows for slippage, it kept sliding off. It was listed as compatible with my Speedlite 430EXll. They include a rubber ring to put on your flash to act a a wedge to keep flash from bending downward due to the weight of the ring flash adapter. The unit blocks the sonar both from flash and camera interfering with auto focus on both. The ring flash adapter blocks your access to the zoom and focus ring on the lens. It is rather bulky and adds quite a lot of weight to the camera. I gave it a try for a week and am returning it and buying a real ring flash. Sometimes adaptors just don't do it.

I bought this as an inexpensive adapter to use with my macro lens, rather than the more expensive ring flash. The adapter is a bit clunky but it works extremely well with my flash. I recommend it.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash 2 Universal Ring Flash Adapter (Large):

Nice build quality, feels solid. Works fine for portrait photography, but not a universal solution for macro. At least with Canon 24-70mm f/4L in macro mode. Partly the problem is caused by lens, cause in the macro mode the front element has to be very close to the object. While the ring adapter mounted on Canon Speedlite 600EX is approx 2-3 cm closer to camera than the front element and the light from it just can't reach the object. Maybe works better for macro lenses that have longer focusing distance.Sometimes creates red eyes.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash 2 Universal Ring Flash Adapter (Large):

This is drastically improved over the first version -
              1. Cheaper
              2. Improved feel (much more solid, plastic is thicker/stronger)
              3. More universal - each of the 2 models fit a wide variety of camera and flash combos
              4. Flatter form factor - easier to pack
              5. The light disk is slightly larger and so far has given me pleasing, slightly softer light.

Negatives- I am not sold on the durability of the spring mechanism that locks it onto your flash head… even if this went, it'd be easy enough to strap it on with a velcro strap. And this begs for a lower support that would screw into your tripod stud and support the bottom of the ring. I rigged one up from some old parts and when mounted, it feels much better than without.

And of course, this won't replace a 'real' ring flash in terms of power, but in almost every other way, it'll do.
